Gunmen attack Togo football team in Angola
At least one person has lost his life and nine others were wounded when unidentified assailants opened fire on the Togo soccer team's bus in Angola.
The 16-team African Cup starts on Sunday in Angola, with Togo due to play its opening match on Monday against Ghana in Cabinda.
Togo's national team had just crossed the border into Angola on Friday when the bus came under fire.
Togo's bus was under police escort in a convoy when it came under fire. The Togolese footballers crouched under their bus seats for 30 minutes as they were ambushed and came under heavy gunfire.
The attackers killed the driver and wounded nine others. Togo's defender Serge Akakpo and backup goalkeeper Obilale Kossi were among those injured in the fatal incident.
‘I think a lot of players want to leave. I don't think they want to be at this tournament any more because they have seen their death already,’ Togo's captain and one of Manchester City's star players, Emmanuel Adebayor, told BBC Radio Five Live.
‘Most of the players want to go back to their family. No one can sleep after what they have seen today. They have seen one of their team-mates have a bullet in his body, who is crying, who is losing consciousness and everything.’
‘So we will have a good meeting tonight, everyone will go to their room, they will rest and we will see tomorrow morning we will make a decision which is good for our life.’
The Front for the Liberation of Enclave of Cabinda, a separatist group, claims to have carried out the attack.
The African Cup, due to begin on Sunday, is the continent's last big sporting showcase before 32 teams arrive in South Africa for the World Cup in June.
