What is Dua?
Dua is the core of worshipping الدعا مخ العباده
Dua is the worshipping itself الدعا هو العباده
Prophet Mohammad (s.a.w) said:
Dua is “requesting a favour by a lower being from a higher being”
It is said “abandonment of dua is an expression of being needless and doing dua is an expression of being needy".
Dua is a request at the peak of empty-handedness and not having any body else to hold on except Allah.
وَقَالَ رَبُّكُمُ ادْعُونِي أَسْتَجِبْ لَكُمْ إِنَّ الَّذِينَ يَسْتَكْبِرُونَ عَنْ عِبَادَتِي سَيَدْخُلُونَ جَهَنَّمَ دَاخِرِينَ
(Ghaafer Verse 60)
And your Lord says: "Call on Me; I will answer your (Prayer): but those who are too arrogant to serve Me will surely find themselves in Hell - in humiliation!
وَإِذَا سَأَلَكَ عِبَادِي عَنِّي فَإِنِّي قَرِيبٌ أُجِيبُ دَعْوَةَ الدَّاعِ إِذَا دَعَانِ فَلْيَسْتَجِيبُواْ لِي وَلْيُؤْمِنُواْ بِي لَعَلَّهُمْ يَرْشُدُونَ
(Baghara 2:186)
And when My servants ask you concerning Me, then surely I am very near; I answer the prayer of the suppliant when he calls on Me, so they should answer My call and believe in Me that they may walk in the right way.
فَاسْتَجَبْنَا لَهُ فَكَشَفْنَا مَا بِهِ مِن ضُرٍّ وَآتَيْنَاهُ أَهْلَهُ وَمِثْلَهُم مَّعَهُمْ رَحْمَةً مِّنْ عِندِنَا وَذِكْرَى لِلْعَابِدِينَ
(Anbiyaa 84)
So we listened to him: We removed the distress that was on him, and we restored his people to him, and doubled their number- as a Grace from Ourselves, and a thing for commemoration, for all who serve us.
Why my prayers do not get answered?
Some people asked Imam Sadigh (a.s) why our prayers or duas do not get answered. Imam said because the one you call upon you do not know. (Source: Towhid-Shaikh Sodoogh)
Prayers (dua) are not merely asking by tongue,
it is a state of the heart.
One can not be ignorant of almighty all along the day and night, and when he needs some thing goes to Allah’s door and yet expects being given then and there.
Absolute empty-handedness creates Esmol-A’Azam (Greatest-name)
in us existentially.
Allah said to Jesus (a.s) call me in the state of a person getting drown in the sea.

Types of Dua
There are 3 types of Duas:
Dua by tongue: is what you want by tongue and assume it is good for you
Dua by heart: is what your inner existence wants to have. This type of dua has a chance of fulfillment if united with tongue.
Dua by potential: is what Allah may give us as per the potentiality Allah has given us. This has a good chance of fulfillment if is asked at right time.
