A drawing by acclaimed filmmaker Abbas Kiarostami will go on show at Tehran’s Golestan Gallery for the first time.

The colored pencil drawing by Kiarostami and one sketch by Sohrab Sepehri (1928-1980) which is quite different from his other creations are among the highlights of the 18th edition of the “100 Works, 100 Artists” exhibit opening on July 30.

This exhibit is quite different from its previous editions, said gallery director Leili Golestan, adding, “Kiarostami is a talented artist and draws beautifully with colored pencils. I like his artworks very much and was able to borrow one of them for the show. I am certain that visitors will like his artwork,” she said at a press conference held at the gallery on Saturday. Kiarostami is also keen on photography having held several exhibits so far.

“Two private collectors are also collaborating this year displaying some of the best of their collections for sale.” Referring to prices she also said, “I believe in moderate prices for artworks. The highest sale volume was in 2007 earning about $265,000. But the years afterwards, there was a noticeable drop in sale.”

“100 Works, 100 Artists” was established in 1992 with 75 artists and now 191 artists are displaying 250 works in its 18th edition. “Discovering new talent was my first priority. Works by young artists go on show next to that of veterans helping to encourage youths,” she remarked.

Sculptures dominate more in this year’s exhibit. “This proves that the art of sculpture is finding its way back into homes. The youth are showing more interest in sculpture and this might be the result of courses and workshops veteran sculptor Parviz Tanavoli has held in Iran for students.”

Many have been added to the list of customers over the past few years since the works are being sold by monthly installments or checks.

The exhibit will take place from July 30 to August 13 at the venue of the gallery located at 42 Kamasaii St. in the Darus neighborhood.
