Iranian filmmaker to direct biopic on French Orientalist De Fouchecour
Iranian director Mohammad-Ali Farsi plans to make a documentary on French Orientalist and Hafez expert Charles-Henri de Fouchecour.
“Shooting is scheduled to begin in September,” Farsi said in a press release published on Tuesday by Iran’s Documentary and Experimental Film Center (DEFC), the producer of the film.
The preproduction process has begun as a team is currently conducting research for the film project, he added.
Farsi said that De Fouchecour is slated to travel to Iran in November to appear in scenes that are to be taken in Iran.
The documentary is part 2 of a trilogy entitled “Majnun”. Part 1 of the trilogy, which is about English writer Edward FitzGerald who best known as the poet of the first and most famous English translation of the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, has previously been completed.
The last part of the trilogy will focus on English Orientalist R.A. Nicholson, translator of Rumi’s works, Farsi said.
De Fouchecour is famous for his translation of the Divan of Hafez.
He served as the director of the Iranology Department of l’Institut Français in Tehran from 1975-1979.
From 1972 to 1985, he also held the chair of Persian at the Institut National des Langues et Civilisations Orientales in Paris.
From 1985 to 1993, he was a professor at the New Sorbonne University and director of its Institut d’Etudes Iraniennes. He is now professor emeritus at this university.
His work in the field of classical Persian literature is vast. He was the founder and director of Abstracta Iranica, a bibliographical and critical review of Iranian studies.
He has published about 50 articles on Persian literature.
Collaborating with the Cultural Section of the French Embassy in Tehran, the Iran National Library and Archives commemorated De Fouchecour during a special ceremony in May 2007.
In June 2007, he also received an award from the Mahmud Afshar Yazdi Foundation for his lifetime research and activities on Persian language and literature.
