Iran president congratulates Morsi on winning Egypt presidency
Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has congratulated Egypt’s new President Muhammad Morsi on his victory in the North African county’s presidential election.
In his message, President Ahmadinejad congratulated Morsi over his victory as president of the “friend and brother” country of Egypt.
The Iranian chief executive highlighted the significance of strengthening Tehran-Cairo relations and wished success for the new Egyptian president and prosperity for the Egyptian people.
After days of delay, Egypt’s Supreme Presidential Electoral Commission (SPEC) on Sunday declared Morsi as the winner of the county’s presidential runoff.
Morsi has earned nearly 52 percent of the vote, with over 13 million ballots, head of the SPEC Farouq Sultan said.
This is while, former Egyptian Prime Minister Ahmed Shafiq won over 12 million votes. The voter turnout was 51.85 percent.
Morsi is the country’s first freely elected president since the ouster of long-time dictator Hosni Mubarak last year.
Egyptians cast their ballots in a two-day presidential runoff election on June 16 and 17.
