Samen-al-aemmeh offensive operation (September 27th, 1981)

‘’Abadan’s siege must be raised’’ this was the command which was ordered to the Iranian Armed forces by late Imam Khomeini, the commander-in-chief, on the November 5th, 1980.

Based on this command, Samen-al-aemmeh 77th division took over the responsibility of Abadan and Khorramshahr's operational region from Arvand command and by building Vahdat road changed Abadan island traffics from sea to land. Following the command issued by the great Islamic Revolution leader, army foremost headquarter prepared a strike operational plan and assigned to 77th infantry division for conduction. The plan examined on September 6th, 1981, was sent to the headquarter, finally the ultimate plan was confirmed and notified to the division for implementation.

Samen-al-aemmeh operation started at 1 a.m on September27th, 1981 with the code of “Victory is due to Allah’s favor and it is not too far “and after a 2-day combat it was terminated successfully on September 29th, 1981. Due to supporting fire, coordination among forces and extraordinary momentum during the first 24 hours, the operation’s objectives were captured by the Islam’s army brave men.

Planning, commanding and implementation of this operation were done by Army Ground Force with the collaboration of a number of Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps units. The attack was launched by the first brigade of 77th division from Zolfaqariyeh region, the second brigade from Fayyaziyeh region, and the third brigade from Darkhovein region and after besieging the enemy's forces the intended lines were captured.

 Result:

-Seizure and security of the Karun’s river east coast. Liberation of 150 square kilometers from Iranian territory and raising Abadan siege at the command of Imam Khomeini: (Abadan siege must be raised).Enemy’s casualties included 3000 killed or wounded and 1656 Iraqis were taken captive.

-Logistical damages: destruction of 90 tanks, personnel carriers and 100 different vehicles, shooting down three lighters and a helicopter.

-Confiscation: One hundred tanks, 60 personnel carriers, three loaders, five guns 150 vehicles.

-Classical planning and making necessary predictions in all fields were among noticeable points in this operation.

-At the end of the operation, Iraqi captives also paraded in front of martyr major general Vali Fallahi and brigadier general Zahirnejad.

And Army high ranking commanders like colonel javadi the commander of both Samen-al-aemmeh 77th division and the operation gave a lecture for Iraqi captives in Arabic language for twenty minutes.

-A day after the operation Iranian high ranking commanders while returning back to Tehran were martyred in a plane crash.

Major general Vali Fallahi head of Army joint staff, Seyyed Mosa Namjoo defense minister. Javad Fakouri commander of Anny air force, Yousef Kolahdouz and Muhammad Jahanara from Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps commanders.

-Following the martyrdom of the commanders, some changes were made in Iranian Army military commanding echelons in a way that brigadier general Zahirnejad was appointed as the head of Army joint staff and Colonel Ali Seyyed Shirazi as the army ground force commander.
