Iran to produce ALS medicine, Reluzole
Iranian researchers have produced the raw material for Reluzole, a medicine used to treat neurological diseases such as Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS).
Reluzole is a derivation of Benzothiazole and is also used to treat diseases like insomnia, anxiety and hysteria, said project manager Ali-Reza Foroumandi.
ALS is a form of motor neuron disease caused by the degeneration of upper and lower neurons, located in the ventral horn of the spinal cord, and the cortical neurons that provide their efferent input.
Since there is a strong demand for this type of drug in the country, domestically made products would enable many people to get the medicine with lower price, Foroumandi noted.
He also explained that the drug has been produced in laboratory and is still at the industrial level.
The medicine, which is in the monopoly of a multinational company in France and America, is available in the form of tablets.
