Iran Judoka enters quartetfinals in China

Iranian Judo practitioner Arash Miresmaili has managed to storm into the quarterfinals of the 16th Asian Games in Guangzhou, China.

In his impressive start, Miresmaili defeated his Kuwaiti rival Ali Isa in the -66 kilogram category although he sustained an injury (fractured his orbital bone,) Fars news agency reported on Monday.

Despite the injury, the world judo champion, beat his host rival in the very last moments of the match and stepped into the quarterfinals of the Guangzhou Asian Games.

The 29-year-old Iranian athlete is scheduled to face a South Korean opponent and will move to the semifinals of the event if he beats his opponent.

Iran’s Miresmaili won gold medals in two World Judo competitions, the first in 2001 in Munich, Germany, and the second in 2003 in Osaka, Japan.

The 2010 Asian Games is a multi-sport event in Guangzhou, China, that began on 12 November and finishes on 27 November 2010. Guangzhou is the second Chinese city to host the games, after Beijing in 1990.

A total of 476 events in 42 sports will be contested by athletes, making it the largest event in the history of the Games.
