Allawi bloc MP killed in Mosul
Unidentified gunmen have killed an Iraqi lawmaker from the parliamentary bloc of former Iraqi Prime Minister Iyad Allawi in the northern Iraqi city of Mosul.
"Gunmen set up an ambush for MP Bashar Hamid Agaidi outside his house in the Amil neighborhood and opened fire when he got home," AFP quoted a police officer as saying in Mosul, which is the capital of Nineveh province.
The parliamentarian was raced to the hospital but died of his injuries later.
Agaidi's colleague, senior al-Iraqiya politician Intisar Allawi, said the victim's brother, who was beside him at the time of the attack, had also been shot and was receiving medical treatment.
The Iraqi police have made one arrest in connection with the assassination, said Abdul Rahim al-Shammari, the head of the security committee for Nineveh province.
Iraqi government spokesman Ali al-Dabbagh condemned the incident and told the Al-Arabiya satellite television network that "this was a criminal act against an important symbol who had just been elected."
