Muslim man chooses beard over job

By Khalid Hasan

WASHINGTON: A Muslim man, A Zaidi, has sued a local police department in Illinois for sacking him because he refused to shave off his beard.

He sued the Kane County Sheriff’s Department, where he worked from July-December 2006.

Zaidi had lost his job as a Kane County correctional officer last year when the new sheriff, Pat Perez, ordered that all employees must be clean-shaven. Zaidi refused, explaining that his beard was “an expression of his Muslim practice and belief”.

A supervisor had asked Zaidi for a proof that he was Muslim, he claims, but he was told to quit or be dismissed before he could do so. A court will now review Zaidi’s complaint. The major problems faced by American Muslims are prejudice and being viewed as terrorists.

Perhaps Jerry Lewis was on his way to Dennis Farina"s house.

The original Nutty Professor was briefly detained Friday at Las Vegas" McCarran International Airport after trying to board a flight to Detroit with an unloaded gun in his carry-on luggage.

Police confiscated the .22-caliber Beretta, and Lewis was cited for carrying a concealed weapon without a permit.

Like Farina, who recently pleaded no contest to trying to fly with a loaded gun that he supposedly forgot was in his briefcase, Lewis" camp maintains that the 82-year-old comedian didn"t know he was packing heat.

And, according to his manager, the so-called weapon was actually a hollowed-out prop gun that wasn"t capable of firing.

Las Vegas Metropolitan Police spokesman Officer Bill Cassell said, however, if it had really been a shell of a gun, "it wouldn"t be a weapon, and we couldn"t cite him for carrying a weapon."

All of which apparently went down in a timely fashion—after Lewis was cited, he was allowed to board his Northwest Airlines flight.

eclipse of the sun

A total eclipse of the sun Friday should fascinate millions of lucky sky watchers in Greenland, Siberia, Mongolia and China.

If the weather cooperates, people along a narrow path who venture out and look up will see stars during the day as the sun is gradually devoured and ultimately blotted out by the moon.

Unlike ancient times, when eclipses were viewed as bad omens in many cultures, fewer people should be expecting doom this time around. Still, myths persist, especially in remote regions, so it"s likely there will be some banging on pots and other creative tactics employed to drive the "evil spirits" away.

Myth and mystery

Solar eclipses occur when the moon moves in front of the sun. This can happen only at the time of a new moon, when the moon is between Earth and the sun. When the three objects align perfectly an eclipse occurs.

Before there was a scientific explanation for eclipses, myth and mystery was pervasive.

Many cultures thought a demon or dragon was devouring the sun.

Even nowadays many myths persist. In Egypt, as one example, children are often kept indoors with windows covered or shades drawn during an eclipse.

Prior to a total solar eclipse in 2006, one Indian paper advised pregnant women not to go outside during the eclipse to avoid having a blind baby or one with a cleft lip. Food cooked before the eclipse was to be thrown out afterward because it would be impure and those who are holding a knife or ax during the eclipse would cut themselves, the Hindustan Times added.

Risk of eye injury

Eclipses can indeed be dangerous.

Despite myths and rumors, a total solar eclipse is safe to watch during the darkness of totality, when no rays of the sun are passing to your eyes. The corona, or atmosphere of the sun, is often partly visible when the moon blocks out the main disk of the sun. Viewing the corona during totality also is safe.

However, looking directly at the sun, even during a partial eclipse, will damage your eyes unless you wear proper eye protection. It is extremely dangerous to eyesight to look directly at an eclipse at any stage expect during totality.

A RICH Arab sent his Lamborghini on a 6,500-mile round trip to Britain for a service.

The £190,000 supercar was put on a scheduled flight from Qatar to Heathrow – then flown BACK after the oil check.

Money was no object as the flight would have cost the owner – thought to be a Sheikh – around £20,000.

The move sparked fury from green campaigners.

An airport worker said: “This car doesn’t have a carbon footprint – more of a crater.”

The overall cost of sending the Lamborghini to London for the oil change would have cost more than £23,000.

His black-and-gold supercar costs £3,552 to service at an approved dealer – on top of the £20,000 to freight from Qatar to Britain.

The Murciélago LP640 – driven by Batman in movie The Dark Knight – arrived from the Middle Eastern country on Friday.

It cleared customs and was trucked to specialist mechanics in London for the service.

On Monday it was flown back 3,250 miles to the oil-rich state where it was collected by the owner.

A cargo handler at Heathrow blasted the car’s environmental damage.

He said: “It would have been far more efficient to fly mechanics out there.”

Woman takes delivery of world"s first commercially cloned dogs

The loss of Booger the pit bull terrier was almost more than Bernann McKinney could bear.

Now she is happy, minus $50,000 and her house, and owner of five cloned Booger puppies.

"It is a miracle for me because I was able to smile again, laugh again and just feel alive again," McKinney told a news conference in the South Korea capital to show off the week-old black puppies - all of whose names include the word Booger.

They are the work of the biotech firm RNL Bio, affiliated with the South Korean lab which produced the world"s first cloned dog and is staffed with former associates of disgraced scientist Hwang Woo-suk.

She sold her house in the United States to raise the $50,000 for RNL scientists to turn skin cells taken from Booger before he died two years ago into embryos carried by two surrogate dogs for two months until giving birth to the puppies last week.

"I had to make sacrifices and I dream of the day, some day when everyone can afford to clone their pet because losing a pet is a terrible, terrible loss to anyone."

After rescuing him from a shelter 12 years ago, Booger had become an indispensable part of her life, said the 57-year-old Californian.

The lab said it hoped to make its technology more commercial along with its programme to clone sniffer dogs for the Korean customs service.

"As of today, we are at the stage of receiving orders from anywhere in the world," RNL CEO Ra Jeongchan said.

RNL has said it expected to clone about 100 dogs next year and for the price to drop as technology improves.

Hwang has been on trial for more than two years on charges of breaking the law on research ethics and for misusing state funds and private donations.

RNL"s research staff is made up of scientists who stayed behind when Hwang left the prestigious Seoul National University after his research results were found to be fraudulent.

Dogs are considered one of the more difficult mammals to clone because their reproductive cycle includes difficult-to-predict ovulations.

Saei wins Iran"s first Beijing gold

Veteran Iranian taekwondo fighter Hadi Saei has claimed Beijing Olympics men"s welterweight gold medal by beating Italy"s Mauro Sarmiento.

In the Friday men"s -80kg final, the Iranian world and Olympic champion beat the European bronze medalist to win his second Olympic taekwondo gold medal and Iran"s first gold medal in the Beijing Olympic Games.

Saei, who stepped up to welterweight after winning the -68kg Olympic gold in Athens, lost the first round 4-2 after the 6-foot-5-inches Sarmiento stunned the Iranian with a two-point axe kick to the head.

Saei battled back in the second round and managed to tie the score at 4-4 with roundhouse kicks to his opponents left side.

The 32-year-old Saei attacked first in the third round to score two points and secure a 6-4 victory in a stunning-comeback fashion.

Sarmiento, who had earlier defeated American champion Steven Lopez in the quarterfinals, raised Saei"s hand to congratulate the veteran.

The four-time world champion Lopez and China"s Zhu Guo, who was earlier beaten by Saei, each captured a bronze medal.

While the sex of their manager makes no difference to men, women suffer more from depression, headaches and insomnia if they take their orders from a member of the same sex.

Scientists from the University of Toronto, which studied 1,800 US workers, believe the explanation could lie in Queen Bee syndrome, in which successful women do no like to be surrounded by female competitors.

It was also suggested by the researchers, females may prefer being bossed by men, as they see leadership as a traditionally male role.

The researchers looked at stress levels and the physical health of workers compared in three situations - working for a male boss, a female, and one of each.

Women with a female supervisor suffered far more than those with a male boss, reporting more psychological distress and physical problems.

Those with a male supervisor had far fewer problems, while those with both were somewhere in the middle.

Men suffered no difference in level of distress, no matter whether the boss was male or female, although they tended to far better if they were bossed by a male-female team.

Scott Schieman, author of the study, admitted the results could be down to women tending to work in different jobs, thereby skewing the results.

He told the Journal of Health and Social Behaviour: "It may be that something about the nature of the work itself is influencing these health differences.

"For example, women working with a woman supervisor might tend to be found mostly in the caring sector or in jobs that tend to be under-resourced, under-funded and under-valued, such as social work or education, creating stress both for the workers themselves and stress for the boss that might trickle down to her subordinates.

"These are speculative points that need to be investigated further".

Huge new prime number discovered

Mathematicians in California could be in line for a $100,000 prize (£54,000) for finding a new prime number which has 13 million digits.

Prime numbers can be divided only by themselves and one.

The prize was set up by the Electronic Frontier Foundation to promote co-operative computing on the Internet.

The team from the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) found the new number by linking 75 computers and harnessing their unused power.

This enabled them to perform the enormous number of calculations needed to find and verify a new prime.

Thousands of people around the world linked the powers of their personal computers in the search for a higher "Mersenne" prime number - named after 17th-Century French mathematician Marin Mersenne.

Mersenne primes are expressed as two to the power of P, minus one - with P being itself a prime number.

Edson Smith, the leader of the winning UCLA team, told the Associated Press news agency: "We"re delighted. Now we"re looking for the next one, despite the odds."

UNITED NATIONS - The U.N. Security Council unanimously approved a new resolutionIran for refusing to halt its uranium enrichment program and offering Tehran incentives to do so. Saturday reaffirming previous sanctions on

The speedy vote followed a compromise between the United States and Russia to lead a new council effort to condemn Iran"s nuclear program, without introducing any new sanctions.

The brief resolution reaffirmed the three earlier Security Council sanctions resolutions, which imposed progressively tougher sanctions on Iran for refusing to halt its uranium enrichment program.

U.S. Ambassador Zalmay Khalilzad said the council had restated its call for Iran to comply with the resolutions and cooperate with the U.N. nuclear watchdog agency, the International Atomic Energy Agency.

"It is unacceptable for Iran to defy the security council resolutions," Khalilzad said.

Iran"s mission to the United Nations immediately condemned the resolution as "unwarranted and unconstructive," and said Iran remained determined to exercise "its inalienable right for peaceful uses of nuclear technology."

Council members met behind closed doors earlier Saturday to hammer out the draft resolution.

The resolution was designed to send a signal that "our resolve has not weakened on this issue, that the discussions among our political directors about the next steps remain very much there," British Foreign Secretary David Miliband said.

Even envoys from countries that abstained in votes on the past resolutions said they supported the measure.

"Once a resolution is adopted by the Security Council, it is incumbent upon member states to comply with it," said Indonesia"s U.N. Ambassador Marty Natalegawa.

He said Indonesia would reaffirm the need to comply with past measures against Iran, although Jakarta did not support them at the time and abstained on the last sanctions resolution adopted on March 3.

Russian Ambassador Vitaly Churkin noted that the new resolution restated that the dispute with Iran should be solved through diplomacy. He said earlier resolutions were carefully crafted to "avoid any military solution to the problem."

Existing sanctions include an asset freeze on 65 companies and individuals linked to Iran"s nuclear program, and a travel ban on five people associated with Tehran"s nuclear and ballistic missile programs.

The sanctions also include bans on Iranian arms exports, supplying Iran with materials and technology that could contribute to its nuclear and missile programs, and on trade in goods that have both civilian and military uses.

The latest resolution refers to the "dual-track approach" adopted by the council. This presents Iran with a choice of incentives to stop enriching uranium and, alternatively, threats of new sanctions if it does not comply.

The document also calls on Tehran "to comply fully and without delay, with its obligations" and meet IAEA"s requirements.

The incentives package put forth by the European Union in 2006 promised Iran political and economic assistance, including a pledge to help it fight drug trafficking from Afghanistan.

IAEA chief Mohamed ElBaradei warned Monday that he cannot determine whether Iran is hiding some nuclear activities, comments that appeared to reflect a high level of frustration with stonewalling of his investigators by the Iranians.

Iran insists its nuclear program is purely peaceful and designed to produce nuclear energy, but the U.S. and Europeans suspect Tehran is pursuing nuclear weapons.

The United States, Britain and France had been pressing for a new round of sanctions to step up pressure against Iran for its continuing refusal to suspend uranium enrichment as a prelude to talks on its nuclear program. But Russia and China objected to new sanctions.

Earlier this week, Iran"s President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad accused "a few bullying powers" of trying to thwart the country"s legitimate nuclear program. Ahmadinejad said that Tehran needs the ability to produce nuclear fuel because it cannot rely on other nations to supply enriched uranium to the Islamic regime"s planned reactors.

Enrichment can turn uranium into the fissile material used in nuclear warheads. But it can also be used to generate power and is allowed under the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty.
