هنگامی که مارجیانا سخنانش را تمام کرده بود، علی بابا به حدی از کمک شایانی که مارجیانا در حق او کرده بود آگاه بود که به او گفت: قبل از آنکه به تو پاداشی که درخور تو است بدهم نخواهم مرد؛ من زندگی ام را به تو مدیونم و به عنوان اولین علامت در مورد سپاسگزاری ام (از تو) تا زمانی را که طبق تصمیمی که دارم بتوانم پاداش تو را تکمیل کنم آزادی ات را به تو هدیه میدهم (تا آن موقع کنیز من نیستی).

اگر روی این نکته و آنچه بعدش اتفاق افتاد فکر کنی خواهی فهمید که این نقشۀ دزدهای جنگل بوده است اینها همه بیانگر این است که آنها برای نابودی تو قسم خورده اند و مناسب است که تو مواظب خودت باشی چرا که یکی از آن دزدها زنده است . من به سهم خودم در مورد محافظت از تو چیزی فروگزار نکردم و الان خیلی کار دارم.

"After I had watched some time for the signal, he threw some stones out of the window against the jars, but neither hearing nor perceiving any body stirring, after throwing three times, he came down, when I saw him go to every jar, after which, through the darkness of the night, I lost sight of him. I waited some time longer, and finding that he did not return, doubted not but that, seeing he had missed his aim, he had made his escape over the walls of the garden. Persuaded that the house was now safe, I went to bed.
بعد از آنکه دیدم که او به عنوان علامت چند عدد سنگ را در برابر کوزه ها انداخت ولی نه صدائی شنید و نه از کسی جنبشی احساس کرد، بعد از سه نوبت سنگ انداختن پائین آمد و دیدم که به هر کوزه سری زد و سپس در میان تاریکی شب دیگر او را ندیدم. اندکی بیشتر درنگ کردم و دیدم که او بر نگشته است بدون شک بخاطر دیدن اینکه هدفش را از دست داده است از بالای دیوار باغ فرار کرد. من که متقاعد شده بودم که خانه دیگر امن شده است رفتم و خوابیدم.
"This," said Morgiana, "is the account you asked of me; and I am convinced it is the consequence of what I observed some days ago, but did not think fit to acquaint you with: for when I came in one morning early, I found our street door marked with white chalk, and the next morning with red; upon which, both times, without knowing what was the intention of those chalks, I marked two or three neighbors doors on each side in the same manner.
مارجیانا – سپس – گفت: این گزارش چیزی بود که از من خواسته بودی و من مطمئنم که این پیامد چیزی است که من چند روز قبل مشاهده کردم ولی تصور کردم که خوب نیست تو را مطلع کنم، یک روز صبح علی الطلوع که به درون خانه می آمدم دیدم که درب خانه ما که به خیابان باز میشود با گچی سفید رنگ، علامت خورده است و روز بعد با گچ قرمز که در هر دو بار بدون اینکه بدانم معنی این علامتها چیست، به همان شکل در هر طرف دو یا سه درب از همسایه ها را علامت زدم

"When I considered that there were thirty seven robbers in the yard, who only waited for a signal to be given by the captain, whom you took to be an oil-merchant, and entertained so handsomely, I thought there was no time to be lost; I carried my pot of oil into the kitchen, lighted the lamp, afterwards took the biggest kettle I had, went and filled it full of oil, set it on the fire to boil, and then poured as much into each jar as was sufficient to prevent them from executing the pernicious design they had meditated: after this I retired into the kitchen, and put out the lamp; but before I went to bed, waited at the window to know what measures the pretended merchant would take.
وقتی فهمیدم که 37 دزد در حیات هستند که فقط منتظر علامتی هستند که از ناحیه رئیسشان صادر شود همان کس که خیال کردی بازرگان روغن است و آن گونه سخاوتمندانه از او پذیرائی کردی، با خودم اندیشیدم که وقتی برای تلف کردن ندارم ظرف روغن را به داخل آشپزخانه بردم و چراغ را روشن کردم و سپس بزرگترین قوری ای که داشتم را گرفتم و رفتم و پر از روغن کردم و روی آتش نهادم تا به جوش آید. سپس آنقدر در داخل هر کوزه ریختم که برای مانع شدن از اجرای نقشۀ مهلکی که در سر می پروراندند کافی باشد. سپس به درون آشپزخانه رفتم و چراغ را خاموش کردم ولی قبل از اینکه بروم بخوابم دم پنجره منتظر ماندم تا ببینم آن مرد که وانمود میکرد بازرگان است چه تدبیری می اندیشد.

بدون آنکه بترسم و وقتی سریع قصد سوء آن کسی که وانمود میکرد بازرگان روغن را فهمیدم در جواب گفتم: هنوز نه ولی به زودی. سپس سراغ کوزۀ بعدی رفتم و وقتی صدای دیگر همان سوال را از من پرسید و من همان جواب را به او دادم و به همین صورت تا به آخری رسیدم و دیدم پر از روغن است ظرفم را پر کردم.

I took the oil-pot, went directly to the jar which stood nearest to me; and when I came to it, heard a voice within, saying, Is it time?
او گفت: آقا! شب گذشته وقتی رفتی بخوابی من رخت حمامت را آماده کرم و به عبد الله دادم، بعد از آن برای دست کردن سوپ، دیگچه را بار گذاشتم ولی همچنانکه موادش را آماده میکردم بدلیل نبود روغن، چراغ خاموش شد و از آنجا که در خانه حتی یک قطره بیشتر هم روغن نبود، به دنبال شمع رفتم ولی – حتی – یک شمع را هم پیدا نکردم. عبد الله که من را در حال ناراحتی دید قضیۀ کوزه های روغنی که در حیات بود را به خاطرم آورد. من ظرف روغنی را گرفتم و مستقیما به سمت کوزه ای که به من نزدیک تر بودم رفتم و وقتی به آن رسیدم صدائی را از درون آن شنیدم که میگفت آیا الان وقتش است؟

While Ali Baba retired to his chamber, Morgiana went into the kitchen to fetch the broth, but before he would drink it, he first entreated her to satisfy his impatience, and tell him what had happened, with all the circumstances; and she obeyed him.
مارجیانا گفت: بازرگان؟ او دقیقا یکنفر مثل من است – صحیح و سالم – به تو خواهم گفت که او کیست و چه اتفاقی برای او افتاده است. ولی بهتر است که درون اتاق خودت این داستان را بشنوی زیرا وقت این است که بعد از استحمام برای سلامتی ات سوپت را بخوری. وقتی علی بابا برای استراحت به درون اتاقش رفت مارجیانا به درون آشپرخانه رفت تا سوپ را بیاورد ولی – علی بابا – قبل از اینکه از سوپ بخورد از او خواست که بی صبری اش را بی پاسخ نگذارد و با همه جزئیات به او بگوید که چه اتفاقی افتاده است و او هم اطاعت کرد.

علی بابا ما بقی کوزه ها را یکی پس از دیگری نگاه کرد و وقتی به آن کوزه ای که درونش روغن بود رسید دید که به طرز عجیبی کم شده است و برای مدتی بی حرکت ماند و بدون آنکه سخنی بگوید گاه به کوزه نگاه میکرد و گاه به مارجیانا و بسیار متعجب بود. سر آخر وقتی به خودش مسلط شد گفت: چه اتفاقی برای بازرگان افتاده است؟

When he returned from the baths, the sun was risen; he was very much surprised to see the oil-jars, and that the merchant was not gone with the mules. He asked Morgiana, who opened the door, and had let all things stand as they were? "My good master," answered she, "God preserve you and all your family; you will be better informed of what you wish to know when you have seen what I have to show you, if you will but give yourself the trouble to follow me."
وقتی او از حمام برگشت، آفتاب طلوع کرده بود. او بسیار متعجب شد وقتی کوزه های روغن را دید و اینکه بازرگان هنوز با قاطرها نرفته است. او از مارجیانا پرسید که چه کسی درب را باز کرد و اجازه داده همه آنها – کوزه ها – در آنجا به آن وضع در بیایند؟ مارجیانا در جواب گفت: ای ارباب خوبم! خدا تو و تمام خانواده ات را حفظ کرد. حال وقتی خودت آنچه را که من می بایست به تو نشان بدهم را دیده ای، بهتر است که از آنچه می خواهی بدانی با خبر شوی البته اگر بخواهی، ولی این زحمت را به خودت بده که به دنبال من بیائی.
As soon as Morgiana had shut the door, Ali Baba followed her; when she requested him to look into the first jar and see if there was any oil. Ali Baba did so, and seeing a man, started back in alarm, and cried out. "Do not be afraid," said Morgiana, "the man you see there can neither do you nor any body else any harm. He is dead." "Ah, Morgiana!" said Ali Baba, "what is it you show me? Explain yourself." "I will," replied Morgiana; "moderate your astonishment, and do not excite the curiosity of your neighbors; for it is of great importance to keep this affair secret. Look into all the other jars."
به محض اینکه مارجیانا درب را بست، علی بابا به دنبال او به راه افتاد و مارجیانا از او خواست که به درون اولین کوزه نگاه کند تا ببیند که آیا در آن روغنی هست. علی بابا هم نگاه کرد و مردی را دید. با وحشت به عقب پرید و فریادی کشید. ماجیانا به او گفت: نترس مردی را که دیدی نه به تو و نه به کسی دیگر نمی تواند صدمه ای بزند او مرده است. علی بابا گفت: آه مارجیانا این چه چیزی است که به من نشان میدهی؟ توضیح بده. مارجیانا گفت: خواهم گفت حیرتت را کمتر کن و حس کنجکاوی همسایگانت را بر نیانگیز چون پنهان نگه داشتن این مسئله خیلی مهم است. به داخل بقیۀ کوزه ها نگاه کن.
