The robber was overjoyed to think that he had addressed himself, at his first coming into the town, to a man who in all probability could give him the intelligence he wanted. "A dead body!" replied he with affected amazement, to make him explain himself. "What could you sew up a dead body for? You mean, you sewed up his winding sheet." "No, no," answered Baba Mustapha, "I perceive your meaning; you want to have me speak out, but you shall know no more."
دزد از تصور اینکه در اولین لحظات ورودش به شهر سراغ کسی رفته بود که به احتمال قوی اطلاعاتی را که میخواست در اختیارش میگذاشت بی نهایت خوشحال بود و با حیرتی ساختگی به خاطر اینکه بابا مصطفی بیشتر در مورد خودش توضیح دهد گفت: یک مرده! برای چه میبایست بدن یک مرده را بدوزی آیا منظورت این است که کفن او را دوختی؟ باب مصطفی در جواب گفت: نه نه من منظورت را فهمیدم تو میخواهی که من همه چیز را بگویم ولی تو چیز بیشتری نخواهی دانست.

بابا مصطفی در حالیکه درفشی در دستش بود نشسته بود و تازه داشت مشغول کار میشد. دزد به او سلامی کرد و به او صبح بخیر گفت و دریافت که او پیرمرد است و گفت: ای مرد درستکار تو خیلی صبح زود مشغول کار میشوی آیا این امکان وجود دارد که کسی در سن و سال تو بتواند اینگونه خوب ببیند سوالم از این جهت است که اگر کمی صبح روشن تر بود میتوانستی محل کوک زدن ها را ببینی.

بعد از آنکه آن دزد از طرف رئیس و سایر دزدان ستایش و تقدیر شد تغییر لباس داد از این رو هیچ کس نمیتوانست او را برای مقصدی که داشت شناسائی کند و اجازۀ این را گرفت که شبانگاه گروه را ترک کند و در سپیده دم به سمت شهر برود و آنقدر بالا و پائین رفته تا از روی تصادف به دکه بابا مصطفی رسید که همیشه قبل از باز شدن سایر مغازه ها باز بود.

این موضوع برای ما در درجۀ اول اهمیت قرار دارد که مطمئن شویم که احتمالا کاری نکنیم تا وانگهی دلیلی برای پشیمان شدن داشته باشیم بدین گونه که خودمان را در دیاری که در این مدت طولانی مخفی بودیم و به دلیلهای بسیاری همچنان باید مخفی باشیم آشکار سازیم (مواظب باشیم خودمان را لو ندهیم). از این رو به کسی که این ماموریت را به عهده میگیرد – این نکته را - گوشزد میکنم و هم برای اینکه جلو فریفته شدن خودمان را بگیریم که آن فرد گزارش غلط به ما ندهد تا موجب نابودی گروه ما شود ، از همه شما میپرسم که در صورت خیانت یا حتی خطا در قضاوت آیا فکر نمیکند که آن فرد باید کشته شود؟

They came again at the appointed time to visit their retreat in the forest; but great was their surprise to find Cassims body taken away, with some of their bags of gold. "We are certainly discovered," said the captain, "and if we do not speedily apply some remedy, shall gradually lose all the riches which our ancestors and ourselves have, with so much pains and danger, been so many years amassing together. All that we can think of the loss which we have sustained is, that the thief who had the secret of opening the door, and we came luckily as he was coming out is dead but his body being removed, and with it some of our money, plainly shows that he had an accomplice; and as it is likely that there were but two who had discovered our secret, and one has been caught, we must look narrowly after the other. What say you, my lads?"
دزدها دوباره در همان زمان مقرر آمدند تا از خلوتگاهشان در جنگل بازدید کنند. ولی بسیار متعجب شدند وقتی دیدند که جسد کاظم با مقداری از کیسه های طلا از آنجا برده شده است. رئیسشان گفت: یقینا جای ما کشف شده و اگر ما به سرعت دچار علاج نباشیم بتدریج تمام ثروتی که از اجدادمان و یا خودمان داریم را از دست خواهیم داد که با رنج و خطر بسیار در طول این سالهای دراز روی هم انباشه شده است. نهایت چیزی که در مورد این ضرری که متحمل شده ایم به ذهن می آید این است که آن دزدی که راز باز شدن درب را میدانست و خوشبختانه ما وقتی که او داشت از درب بیرون می آمد رسیدیم از بین رفته است. ولی جسد او با مقداری از پولهای ما از اینجا برده شده است. این دقیقا نشان میدهد که او یک شریک دارد و از آنجا که احتمالا آنها _فقط_دو نفر بودند که راز ما را کشف کردند و تنها یکی از ایشان به دام افتاد، ما باید با دقت دنبال دیگری باشیم. جوانان من شما چه میگوئید؟

Three or four days after the funeral, Ali Baba removed his few goods openly to the widows house; but the money he had taken from the robbers he conveyed thither by night; soon after the marriage with his sister-in-law was published, and as these marriages were common, nobody was surprised. As for Cassims warehouse, Ali Baba gave it to his own eldest son, promising that if he managed it well, he would soon give him a fortune to marry very advantageously according to his situation.
سه چهار روز بعد از مراسم تدفین، علی بابا وسائل کمی که داشت را آشکارا به منزل بیوۀ برادرش برد ولی پولهائی که از دزدها گرفته بود را شبانگاه به آنجا منتقل کرد. به زودی خبر ازدواج او با زن داداشش پخش شد و از آنجا که اینگونه ازدواجها رایج بود کسی متعجب نشد. و اما انبار کاظم، علی بابا آن را به پسر بزرگترش داد و قول داد که اگر او به خوبی آن را اداره کند به زودی به او این فرصت را خواهد داد که به مقتضای وضعیتش ازدواج بسیار پر نفعی داشته باشد.

Cassims wife stayed at home mourning, uttering lamentable cries with the women of the neighbourhood, who came according to custom during the funeral, and joining their lamentations with hers, filled the quarter far and near with sorrow. In this manner Cassims melancholy death was concealed, and hushed up between Ali Baba, his wife, Cassims widow, and Morgiana, with so much contrivance, that nobody in the city had the least knowledge or suspicion of the cause of it.
همسر کاظم در خانه ماند و عزاداری میکرد و با زنان همسایه کلماتی سوزناک به زبان می آورد. زنانی که بنابر رسمشان در طی مراسم تدفین به آنجا آمده با او به سوگواری نشسته بودند و یک چهارم خانه را پر کرده و در دور و نزدیک با غم نشسته بودند. با این روش مرگ (کشته شدن) غمناک کاظم مخفی ماند و در میان علی بابا، همسرش، بیوۀ کاظم و مارجیانا پنهان ماند به گونه ای که در شهر هیچ کس از این مطلب کمترین آگاهی یا سوء ظنی کسب نکرد.

Four neighbours carried the corpse on their shoulders to the burying-ground, reciting some prayers. Morgiana, as a slave to the deceased, followed the corpse, weeping, beating her breast, and tearing her hair: and Ali Baba came after with some neighbours, who often relieved the others in carrying the corpse to the burying-ground.
چهار تن از همسایگان جسد را بر دوشهایشان حمل کرده به سمت محل دفن بردند و دعاهائی می خواندند. مارجیانا به عنوان کنیز آن متوفی، دنبال جنازه بود، گریه میکرد و بر سینه های خود میزد و موهایش را میکند. و علی بابا با چند همسایه دنبال آنها میرفت و ما بقی را در حمل جنازه به سمت آرامگاه کمک میکرند.
