Gloomy days dim cognitive function
Gloomy days, on which the sky is gray and it is drizzling, are responsible for dimmed memory and other cognitive problems in depressed individuals.
Previous studies had demonstrated a strong link between seasonal affective disorder (SAD) and other forms of depression, suicide, aggressive behavior and even murder.
These studies had revealed depression to be more prevalent on darker days with less sunlight, whereas aggressive behaviors were more frequently reported on sunny days.
According to a study published in Environmental Health, sun exposure for a period of two weeks improves cognitive function in depressed individuals; more sunlight is linked with better function.
Such an association, however, was not reported in non-depressed individuals.
Scientists concluded that sunlight can help improve cognitive impairment in depressed individuals.
They hope that light therapy might help those suffering from cognitive impairments in the same manner that it treats those suffering from SAD.
