Acclaimed Iranian filmmaker Dariush Mehrjui is scheduled to make an English-language film about the 13th-century Persian poet Mowlavi.

“The Rumi Kimia’s screenplay has been written in collaboration with Iranian writer Saeedeh Qods and is based on one of her novels called Kimia Khatoun,” Mehrjui told Fars News Agency.

“The film focuses on the relationship between Mowlavi and his spiritual guide Shams from the perspective of a 15-year-old girl,” he added.

Produced by Marjan Moqimi, the project will be filmed in India and the Turkish city of Konya, where the Persian poet has been laid to rest.

“The screenplay includes a number of Mowlavi’s poems and scenes featuring Sama, the trancelike dance of Sufi dervishes,” Mehrjui explained.

A new wave director, screenwriter, producer, and film editor, Dariush Mehrjui graduated from the UCLA University in Philosophy and Film Studies in 1964.

He has produced and directed over 20 feature-length films, including The Cow, The Cycle, The Tenants, Hamoon and The Pear Tree. His films have received more than 50 national and international awards.
