US to honor Iran’s Forough Farrokhzad
The University of Maryland is slated to hold a film screening session to commemorate the modern Iranian poetess, Forough Farrokhzad.
The event will screen German filmmaker Claus Strigel’s Moon Sun Flower Game, which is a documentary about Forough Farrokhzad’s adopted son Hossein Mansouri.
The young poetess met Mansouri in the 1962, when she was making The House is Black, a 22-minute film about lepers in the Iranian city of Tabriz.
Organized by the Roshan Cultural Heritage Institute Center for Persian Studies (RICPS), the event will be held on the occasion of the International Women’s Day on March 8, 2009.
Forough Farrokhzad is considered one of the most significant poets of twentieth-century Iran. She published her first volume of poems called The Captive which was followed by The Wall, The Rebellion and Another Birth.
Her poem ‘Let Us Believe in the Beginning of the Cold Season’, which was published posthumously, is considered by some to be the best-structured modern poem in the Persian language.
Forough died in a car accident on February 13, 1967.
Michael Craig Hillmann wrote a brief literary biography of Forough titled A Lonely Woman: Forough Farrokhzad and Her Poetry.
Forough has also been the subject of Iranian filmmaker Nasser Saffarian’s documentaries The Mirror of the Soul (2000), The Green Cold (2003), and Summit of the Wave (2004).
