US role in spread of terrorism in the world: Afghanistan
According to 2015 report of the Global Terrorism Index (GTI), 4,505 people were killed in Afghanistan in 2014. The country has been ravaged by a Taliban-led insurgency for decades and the terrorists were responsible for nearly 50% of the terrorism-related deaths that occurred in that year.
The majority of attacks were carried out by bombings and executions of police officers and hostages. The Taliban is also renowned for persecuting the Hazara minority group, the same report said.
A number of terrorist groups have emerged in different parts of the world since the US supported the formation and activities of Al-Qaeda in Afghanistan to fight the former Soviet forces.
As a result of US policies in Afghanistan, terrorism has spread in Asia and Africa. Most of the terrorist groups are ideologically affiliated to Wahhabism, the official religion of Saudi Arabia, a staunch ally of the United States.
The root of these groups can be traced to the invasion of Soviet Union of Afghanistan in 1979, when the United States on the pretext of fighting Communism supported a number of groups in the South Asian country. As a result the Taliban came to power in Afghanistan. But after it was routed, the group recruited fresh forces and began to wage war against the central government.
The United States and some regional Arab countries are to blame for the emergence of groups such as the Taliban. These groups are ideologically affiliated to Wahhabism whose birthplace is Saudi Arabia and is the official religion of the kingdom.
The US and other countries that directly or indirectly support such groups, financially, ideologically or through providing them with armaments must take a lesson from the past and stop their support of terrorism as soon as possible to allow peace and tranquility return to South Asia. The money spent on armaments for killing the innocent people must be spent for the development of South Asia. It will be possible only when some Arab countries as well as extra regional powers stop meddling in the affairs of this region.
