The Department of Arabic and Middle Eastern Studies is situated in theMichael Sadler Building right next to the Brotherton Library, which has a wide range of books and journals on Arabic language and linguistics and on literature, religion and history of the Middle East. The Department has a collection of over 500 manuscripts in Arabic in the Brotherton library which students are encouraged to use. The facilities of the language centre provides the University of Leeds with the most modern language learning facilities in Britain, are within reach in the same building. All students have access to the wider facilities of the University including the campus computer network and the newly established Electronic Resource and information Centre (E.R.I.C.) consisting of computers specially designed for Modern Languages Students, super-speed access to the World Wide Web, a text scanner unit, and the most advanced machine-translation packages in Europe.
The Department has a friendly and relaxed atmosphere and every student has a personal as well as an academic tutor to guarantee best results. An imaginative students society organises an exciting and varied programme including Middle Eastern meals and other social and cultural events.
Undergraduate:
Our degree programmes provide intensive teaching of the Arabic language as well as courses on Middle Eastern history and
Islamicthought and culture.We teach Standard Arabic, which is the official written language, used throughout the Arab World in (virtually) all formal circumstances (religious, political, commercial, literary, media, etc.). Students have the opportunity to study modern and classical literature, the
Qur’an and Hadith. We also lay emphasis on practical language skills and students are taught to speak as well as write Arabic. An important element in our language degrees is the second year, which is spent at a language centre in an Arabic speaking country.
Course Details
We offer five degree programmes as follows:
BA Honours in Middle Eastern Studies
BA Honours Arabic and Islamic Studies
BA Honours Arabic Studies
BA Honours Arabic Studies and Middle Eastern Studies
BA Honours Islamic Studies
BA Joint Honours Arabic
Arabic Studies and Joint Honours students take the same core modules in Arabic language and background studies. In Level One an intensive beginners course in the language prepares you for the Year Abroad. The Level Two and Level Three modules build on your knowledge of Arab and Islamic history and culture. Arabic Studies students take modules beyond the core subjects and expand their understanding of the Arab World through courses on Arabic thought and culture, linguistics and media, classical and travel literature, cinema and gender studies.
Arabic and Islamic Studies students are taught together with the Arabic Studies students for language courses, but take optional modules in the field of Islamic studies and chose their electives either from the Department of Arabic or from the Department of Theology and Religious Studies.
Arabic and Islamic Studies BAThe Middle East and the Muslim countries are crucially important areas of the world which have an immense impact on contemporary affairs. Knowledge of the Arabic language is essential for understanding the societies of the area and we make language a central component of our degree programmes. This degree will give you insight into the Islamic world while equipping you with practical skills in speaking, understanding, reading and writing the language. You will study Middle Eastern history, Arabic and Islamic culture and thought.

Islamic Studies BAThis course focuses on the Islamic history, Islamic civilisation, Qur'anic studies, culture and society in theMiddle East. Students choose their electives either from the Department of Arabic or theSchool ofTheology and Religious Studies. Arabic language may be taken as an option.

Postgraduate: The department of Arabic and Middle Eastern Studies offers both taught and research postgraduate degree programmes.
Research ProgrammesMA/Mphil/PhD.
The Department offers MA by research, MPhil and PhD. The requirement for an MA or MPhil is a good honours degree with an average equivalent to at least 2:1 in the British system. The requirement for PhD includes a Bachelor and Master's degrees or, in exceptional cases, a Bachelor's degree with first class honours. International students are expected to obtain 6 IELTS or 550 in TOEFL. The Department has arrangements to supervise students by academic staff within the Department as well as through joint supervision with other related Departments, if needed.
Supervision is available in Arabic language and linguistics, Arabic dialectology, methods and approaches in the teaching of Arabic, Arabic literature (both classical and modern),Comparative Literature, Arabic folklore, linguistic analysis and semantics, Islamic studies, Studies in Islamic Material Culture, The Mediterranean and Indian Ocean, Gender Studies, Middle Eastern history and politics and International Relations of the Middle East, translation theory and Maltese studies, Arab Cinema and Arabic Literature in English and French.
