Ibn 'Asakir

, Abu al-Qasim 'Ali b. al-Hasan (AC 1105-1176), Tarikh madina Dimashq: wa dhikr fadhliha wa tasmiya man hallaha min al-amathil aw ijtaza bi nawahiha min waridiha wa ahliha, ed. In addition to a thirty page introduction, the book also devotes fourteen pages to al-Baqillani's tarjama, quoted from the book tartib al-madarik wa taqrib al-masalik li ma'rifat a'lam madhhab al-imam malik by al-qadhi 'ayyadh b. musa al-yahsubi al-sabti (d. 544).

Ibn Hajar al-'Asqalani

, Ahmad b. Nur al-Din (d. 852/1449) Tahdhib al-Tahdhib, 12 vols.,Hyderabad, Deccan: Da'irat al-Ma'arif al- Nizamiyya, 1325-27/1907-10. Also: 8 vols., ed. 'Ali Muhammad al-Bijawi, Cairo: Dar Nahdat Misr li'l-Tab' wa'l-Naskh, 1970-72. Also: 14 vols., Beirut: Dar al-Fikr lil-Tiba`ah wa-al-Nashr, 1984-1988 (a resetting of the Hyderabad edition, with 2 vols. of indices at the end). Also: 12 vols., ed. Mustafa `Abd al-Qadir `Ata', Beirut, Dar al-Kutub al-`Ilmiyah, 1994 (includes some cross-references and a few textual emendations).Tahdhib al-Tahdhib is the single most convenient biographical dictionary of hadith transmitters mentioned in the Six Books. It is an abridgement of al-Mizzi, Tahdhib al-Kamal, stressing lists of authorities and evaluations from famous rijal critics, usually omitting the discussion of individual hadith reports. -CM

---, Lisan al-Mizan, 7 vols., Hyderabad, Deccan: Da'irat al-Ma'arif al-Nizamiyya, 1329-31/1911-13.

Lisan al-Mizan quotes the entire text of Mizan al-i`tidal concerning men not in the Six Books, i.e., not covered in Ibn Hajar, Tahdhib "al-Tahdhib". To most biographies, it then adds comments, mostly additional evaluations from rijal critics. Together with Tahdhib "al-Tahdhib", it makes a good reference of first resort for traditionists of the first three centuries. It is sometimes represented as a biographical dictionary of weak transmitters, but this is an unfair generalization, for every traditionist who lived in the 4th/10th century and after necessarily did not appear in any of the Six Books. -CM

This is a succinct précis of Tahdhib "al-Tahdhib", giving for each transmitter mentioned in the Six Books name, date (or generation--useful for the many without dates), and a one- or two-word evaluation of trustworthiness, together with abbreviations indicating in which of the Six Books he appears.

---, Ta'jil al-manfa'a bi-zawa'id rijal al-a'immah al-arba'a,Hyderabad: Matba'at Majlis Dairat al-Ma`arif al-Nizamiyah, 1323.

This book deals with traditionists who do not appear in the Six Books but do appear in the musnads of the 4 imams, mainly Malik (al-Muwatta'), al-Shafi`i (the musnad assembled by Abu al-`Abbas al-Asamm, or rather his disciple Muhammad ibn Ja`far ibn Matar), Ahmad (al-Musnad), and Abu Hanifah (the musnad assembled by Ibn Khusraw al-Balkhi (d. 526/1131-32), with extras brought in from al-Daraqutni, Kitab al-Ghara'ib `an Malik, al-Bayhaqi, Ma`rifat al-sunan wa-al-athar, Ahmad Ibn Hanbal, Kitab al-Zuhd, and Muhammad ibn al-Hasan al-Shaybani, Kitab al-Athar. Ibn Hajar's book is a reworking of al-Husayni (d.Cairo, 765/1364), al-Tadhkirah bi-rijal al-`asharah.

Based on al-Dhahabi, Kitab al-Mushtabih. Some prefer the earlier Ibn Makula, al-Ikmal fi raf` al-irtiyab `an al-mu'talif wa-al-mukhtalif min al-asma' wa-al-kuna wa-al-ansab, ed. `Abd al-Rahman ibn Yahya al-Mu`allimi al-Yamani, al-Silsilah al-jadidah, 6 vols., Hyderabad: Da'irat al-Ma`arif al-`Uthmaniyah, 1962-1967, but I more often find what I need in Ibn Hajar. Both books are devoted to advice on pointing names.

This is the best known commentary on Bukhari's Sahih. -BS

---, Hady al-Sari, 2 vols., Cairo, 1383.

This is the introduction to the author's Fath al-Bari, a commentary on Bukhari's Sahih. Mohammad Fadel has translated the first four chapters of this work in "Ibn Hajar's Hady al-Sari: A Medieval Interpretation of the Structure of al-Bukhari's al-Jami' al-Sahih: Introduction and Translation," Journal of Near Eastern Studies, vol. 54, no. 3, 1995, pp. 161-197. He explains: "Hady al-sari is a lengthy work. Much of it consists of indexes: a glossary of rare words found in the Sahih, vocalizations of ambiguous proper names, full identification of the transmitters al-Bukhari cited in his work, etc. The first four chapters, however, present his view of the generic features of Sahih al-Bukhari as a text. In these chapters, Ibn Hajar is concerned with revealing the structure of the work and explaining the complexities which arise in this work as a result of its structure."

Ibn Babuya

(Ibn Babawayh) [al-Qummi], Muhammad b. 'Ali (306-381), Man la yahdhuruh al-faqih, Najaf: al-Islamiyya, 1378/1958.The author is known also as Shaikh Saduq. One of the main Shiite collections of hadiths, this book covers only legal matters.

Ibn Hibban

al-Busti, Muhammad (d. 354/965), Sahih ibn Hibban, 1st vol., Cairo, 1952.The hadiths in this book are arranged neither as in a musannaf nor as in a musnad. Ali b. Balban (d. 739/1339) rearranged the hadiths and published them as al-Ihsan fi taqrib Sahih Ibn Hibban. Ibn Hibban's collection contains 2647 hadiths that do not appear in the collections of Bukhari or Muslim, and these are published in legal order in the book Mawarid al-zam'an ila zawa'id Ibn Hibban by Nur al-Din 'Ali b. Abi Bakr al-Haythami (d. 807/1405).

Kitab al-Thiqat, ed. Muhammad `Abd al-Mu`id Khan, 9 vols.,Hyderabad: Matba`at Majlis Da'irat al-Ma`arif al-`Uthmaniyah, 1973-1983.

Ibn Hibban was noted as a lenient rijal critic, tending to give traditionists the benefit of the doubt rather than to dismiss them as, for example, majhul.

Ibn Hisham

, 'Abdalmalik, see: Ibn Ishaq.Ibn Ishaq,One Recension: [author also listed as: Ibn Hisham, Abdalmalik], Sirah Sayyidina Muhammad rasul Allah. Das Leben Muhammemd's nach M. Ibn Ishaq, ed. F. Wüstenfeld, 2 vols., Göttingen, 1858-60 (Ibn Hisham's recension). Other recension: Kitab al-siyar wa al-maghazi, ed. Zakkâr, Beirut, 1978 (al-'Utâridî's transmission from Yunus b. Bukair's recension of Ibn Ishaq's Kitab al-Maghazi).

Translated into English by A. Guillaume as The Life of Muhammad: A Translation of Ibn Ishaq's Sirat Rasul Allah ,OxfordUniv. Press,Karachi, 1955.

For two critical reviews of Guillaume's translation which offer some corrections refer to Serjeant, R.B, BSOAS, 1958, vol. 21, Part 1, pp. 1-14 and Tibawi, Abdul Latif, Islamic Quarterly, vol. 3, no. 3, 1956, pp. 196-214.

The following review was written in entirety by Alford Welch: "Ibn Ishaq's Sirah or Maghazi is extant is two recensions, one by Ibn Hisham, used by Guillaume and often listed as the "author" of this translation, and another by Yunus ibn Bukayr (d. 814). Guillaume has attempted to reconstruct Ibn Ishaq's original work by beginning with Ibn Hisham's recension, placing all of his additions in the back as notes, and then inserting long excerpts that were deleted by Ibn Hisham, but have been preserved in works such as al-Tabari's Ta'rikh."

A list of books, arranged with biographical information by topic, then by the names of authors in roughly chronological order. Most, of course, are no longer extant; however, even titles are often useful to know. Bayard Dodge's translation is unreliable. To be used with J. W. Fück, "Neue Materialien zum Fihrist," ZDMG 90 (1936):298-321; idem, "Some Hitherto Unpublished Texts on the Mu`tazilite Movement From Ibn al-Nadim's Kitab-al-Fihrist," pp. 51-74 in Professor Muhammad Shafi:` Presentation Volume, ed. Fück's and Arberry's various addenda and corrigenda were incorporated in this edition: Kitab al-Fihrist, ed. Ridha-Tajaddud,Tehran: Maktabat al-Asadi, 1350. Unfortunately, the new Ridha-Tajaddud edition seems to be hard to find in the original, Iranian printing, while Lebanese reprints confuse matters with new paginations.

Ibn al-Qattan

(d. 365/975-976?), al-Kamil fi dhu`afa' al-rijal, 6 vols.,Beirut: Dar al-Fikr, 1984.The author is also known as Ibn `Adi. Apparently there is also a second edition of this work. Includes many allegedly fabricated hadith reports, some of which the author defends. -CM
