Relevant sections include, but are not limited to bab al-qawl fi ma'na al-khabar, bab al-kalam fi aqsam al-akhbar, bab al-kalam fi ithbat al-tawatur wa istihala al-kizb 'ala ahlihi, bab akhar fi sifat ahl al-tawatur, bab akhar fi khabar al-wahid, which cover pp. 160-177.

Ibn Hajar al-'Asqalani

It is an abridgement of al-Mizzi, Tahdhib al-Kamal, stressing lists of authorities and evaluations from famous rijal critics, usually omitting the discussion of individual hadith reports. -CM

Lisan al-Mizan quotes the entire text of Mizan al-i`tidal concerning men not in the Six Books, i.e., not covered in Ibn Hajar, Tahdhib "al-Tahdhib". To most biographies, it then adds comments, mostly additional evaluations from rijal critics. Together with Tahdhib "al-Tahdhib", it makes a good reference of first resort for traditionists of the first three centuries. It is sometimes represented as a biographical dictionary of weak transmitters, but this is an unfair generalization, for every traditionist who lived in the 4th/10th century and after necessarily did not appear in any of the Six Books. -CM

This is a succinct précis of Tahdhib "al-Tahdhib", giving for each transmitter mentioned in the Six Books name, date (or generation--useful for the many without dates), and a one- or two-word evaluation of trustworthiness, together with abbreviations indicating in which of the Six Books he appears.

This book deals with traditionists who do not appear in the Six Books but do appear in the musnads of the 4 imams, mainly Malik (al-Muwatta'), al-Shafi`i (the musnad assembled by Abu al-`Abbas al-Asamm, or rather his disciple Muhammad ibn Ja`far ibn Matar), Ahmad (al-Musnad), and Abu Hanifah (the musnad assembled by Ibn Khusraw al-Balkhi (d. 526/1131-32), with extras brought in from al-Daraqutni, Kitab al-Ghara'ib `an Malik, al-Bayhaqi, Ma`rifat al-sunan wa-al-athar, Ahmad Ibn Hanbal, Kitab al-Zuhd, and Muhammad ibn al-Hasan al-Shaybani, Kitab al-Athar. Ibn Hajar's book is a reworking of al-Husayni (d.Cairo, 765/1364), al-Tadhkirah bi-rijal al-`asharah.

Both books are devoted to advice on pointing names.

This is the introduction to the author's Fath al-Bari, a commentary on Bukhari's Sahih. Mohammad Fadel has translated the first four chapters of this work in "Ibn Hajar's Hady al-Sari: A Medieval Interpretation of the Structure of al-Bukhari's al-Jami' al-Sahih: Introduction and Translation," Journal of Near Eastern Studies, vol. 54, no. 3, 1995, pp. 161-197. He explains: "Hady al-sari is a lengthy work. Much of it consists of indexes: a glossary of rare words found in the Sahih, vocalizations of ambiguous proper names, full identification of the transmitters al-Bukhari cited in his work, etc. The first four chapters, however, present his view of the generic features of Sahih al-Bukhari as a text. In these chapters, Ibn Hajar is concerned with revealing the structure of the work and explaining the complexities which arise in this work as a result of its structure."

Ibn Babuya

(Ibn Babawayh) [al-Qummi], Muhammad b. 'Ali (306-381), Man la yahdhuruh al-faqih, Najaf: al-Islamiyya, 1378/1958.The author is known also as Shaikh Saduq. One of the main Shiite collections of hadiths, this book covers only legal matters.

Ibn Hibban

al-Busti, Muhammad (d. 354/965), Sahih ibn Hibban, 1st vol., Cairo, 1952.The hadiths in this book are arranged neither as in a musannaf nor as in a musnad. Ali b. Balban (d. 739/1339) rearranged the hadiths and published them as al-Ihsan fi taqrib Sahih Ibn Hibban. Ibn Hibban's collection contains 2647 hadiths that do not appear in the collections of Bukhari or Muslim, and these are published in legal order in the book Mawarid al-zam'an ila zawa'id Ibn Hibban by Nur al-Din 'Ali b. Abi Bakr al-Haythami (d. 807/1405).

Ibn Hibban was noted as a lenient rijal critic, tending to give traditionists the benefit of the doubt rather than to dismiss them as, for example, majhul.

The following review was written in entirety by Alford Welch: "Ibn Ishaq's Sirah or Maghazi is extant is two recensions, one by Ibn Hisham, used by Guillaume and often listed as the "author" of this translation, and another by Yunus ibn Bukayr (d. 814). Guillaume has attempted to reconstruct Ibn Ishaq's original work by beginning with Ibn Hisham's recension, placing all of his additions in the back as notes, and then inserting long excerpts that were deleted by Ibn Hisham, but have been preserved in works such as al-Tabari's Ta'rikh."
