Iran summons Swiss envoy over fresh US sanctions
The Iranian Foreign Ministry has summoned Swiss Ambassador to Tehran Giulio Hass in protest to the latest US sanctions against a number of companies and individuals for doing business with the Islamic Republic.
According to Press TV, during a meeting in Tehran on Monday evening, the director general for North American Affairs Bureau at the Foreign Ministry termed the US government’s action and the comments made by some American statesmen as “against the spirit” of a landmark nuclear deal clinched between Iran and the six major powers in Geneva last November.
The senior Iranian diplomat also stressed that the recent statement released by the Treasury Department clearly demonstrates the US government’s confusion in determining its position on issues like terrorism.
He went on to say that the world public opinion, given the realities on the ground, regards the Islamic Republic of Iran as one of the biggest victims of terrorism, and the assassination of thousands of Iranian nationals and diplomats in Yemen, Iraq, Afghanistan and Lebanon attests to this fact.
The top Iranian official added that Tehran’s stance on the need to fight against terrorism is transparent, and Washington – with regards to its overt support for terrorist groups in the Middle East – is in no position to level such accusations against Iran.
Hass, for his part, assured the Iranian official that Iran's message would be conveyed to Washington as soon as possible and that a response would be relayed back to the Iranian Foreign Ministry.
