Al al-Bayt University (The House of theProphetUniversity) is located on the outskirts of the city of Mafraq, 65 Kilometers to the north-east (about 45 minutes drive) of the capital Amman - Jordan .
The university has integrated academic facilities, student housing, and social services on one site, extending over an area of 7539 dunums (dunum=1000 square meters).

Brief History:

On August 17, 1992 (18 Safar 1413 H), a Royal Decree was issued ordaining the establishment of Al al-Bayt University. As stated in the Royal Message, the University is to meet an urgent need for a new kind of university; one that combines the requirements of scientific methodology in teaching and research, on one hand, and the requirements of belief and clarity of vision on the other, thus, creating harmony between the rounded personality of the Muslim and his new environment.

Since the establishment of the University, the area has been transformed into an Oasis in the Desert through the implementation of new schemes of plantation, combating desertification and preserving the indigenous species. Water harvesting in this arid area has proven to be successful.

Al-Hashemiyyah Library

Al-Hashemiyyah Library was instituted along with the establishment of the University in 1994; it is the main library in the University. It was named al-Hashemiyyah Library as a tribute to the Hashemites as this name extends throughout history and still contributes in the present day. The Library's main aim is to promote itself as a developed library which seeks to encourage scientific research methods in the university, especially those which concern Islamic-Arabic culture, in the field of research and development plus associate and interact with the community.

The University authorities have given the Library special attention with regard to financial benefits and qualified personnel so that it could reach its present status.
The Library is fully computerized and all its sections are equipped with relevant databases.

All sections are equipped with computers; in addition 15 computers are also available to enable students to search for books and other library materials through an information retrieval database. The Library is also connected to the Internet.
The Library of Congress Classification System is the system used in Al-Hashemiyyah Library as this system contains both letters and numbers which makes it appropriate for academic libraries.

Al-Hashemiyyah Library now has over 150,000 library materials, in addition to subscriptions with Arabic as well as foreign periodicals. The seating capacity for the library halls is 1000 which are distributed over the following:

Ibn al-Nadeem Hall: a specialized hall for books on humanitarian sciences and it contains books from A-J according to the classification system.

Haj Khalifa Hall: This hall partly contains humanitarian science books as well as literary and scientific books ranging form K-Z according to the classification system.

References (Sulaimaniah) Hall: A special hall for referring to encyclopedias, atlases, dictionaries, biographies, bibliographic materials etc., all these carry the letter R to indicate it as a reference book.

Dahir al_Jazairy Hall: Special collections are stocked in this hall which comprise of rare and old , valuable, as well as the official Jordanian and Arabic manuscripts in addition to books of British Archives, all these carry the letter S to indicate special collection.

Ibn Hajjar Al-Askari Hall: A special hall for Hadith (Traditions of the Prophet) and for post-graduate students. This hall contains an extra copy of reference books on Koranic studies and Hadith, it is also equipped with a computer and CD-ROM driver for using CDs concerned with Koranic studies and Hadith.

Periodicals Hall: This hall is comprised of scientific periodicals in Arabic and several foreign languages, as well as local, Arab and international newspapers. This hall also contains a special section for academic thesis.

Ismael Baghdadi Hall: A special hall for the university's academic staff.

Abd El Hai Al-Kittani Hall: A reading hall for students.

The Library intends to set up an electronic library to be in touch with latest information materials as quick as possible. The Library has developed databases on CD-ROM for several academic specializations, and subscriptions through Internet communication, besides subscription from the British Library to receive scientific articles and brochures which are requested by the academic staff and students.

The Hashemiyyah Library has been dealing with public and private universities inJordan to improve its holdings and in order to provide the premium service to its users. The Library has signed an agreement with theUniversity of Jordan and Yarmouk University in the fields of book circulation and other library services, and this agreement also permits the students of one university to use the services of the other universities mentioned in the agreement.
The future plans of the Al-Hashemiyyah Library is to continue providing superior services and information along with latest developments, furthermore a plan to build a new library on an international level is in the offing
