Timothy Tyler

United States

Born 1958

There are as many types of artistic expressions as there are human personalities. Since Tim was fourteen years old, he has striven to create paintings that capture a moment of beauty. His sensitivity to color, craftsmanship, and “a certain sense of light” has resulted in paintings critics and collectors have delighted in for almost thirty years.

Growing up inCalifornia, Oklahoma, and Arizona gave Tim the opportunity to see and study the works of contemporary masters such as Wilson Hurley, Bettina Steinke, Clark Hulings, and many others. He sought out professional artists who answered his questions about composition, techniques, and materials. Mixed in with helpful comments and critiques, however, was encouragement to learn by doing. Tim studied books by master painters, went to museums, and attended workshops.
He continues to refine his work through dedication to craft. Whether painting figures, still life, or landscape, capturing precise right colors, edges and shapes is his aim. Working from life results in a rich surface quite naturally.

Tim shares the things he has learned in a few workshops around the U.S. and Europe. Scottsdale Artists School, Loveland Academy of Fine Art, Minnesota River School, and Taos Institute of Art are among these.

Continually growing as an artist, Tim is exploring and researching mythological subjects. Through these archetypes and symbols, he aspires to depict human themes and emotions. These works are carefully set up and painted direct from life - the same method he uses for his still life and portrait art. He is still inspired by the works of Sargent, Zorn, Leighton, Waterhouse, Bouguereau, and Gérôme.

During his twenties, Tim worked as a commercial artist and painted. He was also undertaking corporate and private commissions. He exhibited at Scottsdale Artists’ School “Best & Brightest” show and was named by Art Talk as an “Artist Worth Watching” for his still life paintings. Museums, collectors, art publications & organizations have long held Tim as a fine American artist. Publications that have featured his work include Southwest Art, Art of the West, American Art Review, The Artists’ Magazine, Fine Art Collector &, Wildlife Art Magazine. The Artists’ Magazine featured his painting, “Tangerines & Turquoise” on the cover of their July/August 2002 issue.
His work hangs in the permanent collections of Bennington Center for the Arts in Vermont and the Chisholm Trail Museum in Oklahoma.

Other museums that have exhibited his work include Tacoma Art Museum, C.M. Russell Museum, and the Gilcrease Museum. Tim has been a signature member of the Oil Painters of America since 1993. He has also been a member of American Society of Portrait Artists, the Portrait Society of America, and was recently invited to join the California Art Club - a rare occurrence for an out-of-state artist.. In 2001 - 2002, Tim was honored to have his work included in the Renaissance Show & Sale in Hilton Head, NC & the American Art Classic held in Houston, TX through Morris and Whiteside Galleries. Presently nine galleries from coast to coast represent his work.

The artist’s wife and children have often been the subjects of his paintings. He has two daughters, Whitney and Hannah, and three sons: Trey, Levi, and Seth.
His wife Shandine designed and maintains his site: www.timothyctyler.com as well as gilds and finishes many of his frames.

On trips taken to gather field studies for landscapes, his children often take turns “going with Dad” to locations likeTeton National Park, the Redwoods, or theGrand Canyon.
