     Brief History of Alzahra University

 Alzahra University, the only Iranian university exclusively established for girls and women students, was founded in 1343 (1964). At the beginning, the university, then called“ the Higher Educational Institute for Girls” had only 40 students enrolled in : a) Translation in Foreign Languages) Secretarial Studies, and c) Psychology. During the second year of its activities, the University also offered courses in Wifery and admitted some students for this field of study.
 During the academic year of 1354-55 (1975-76),the Higher Institute for Girls was grown to a university with four faculties of :
1) Basic sciences , 2) Literature and Humanities , 3) Management  Sciences ,and 4) Economics .
 After the Islamic Revolution, the name of the university was changed to Alzahra Brief History of Alzahra University (peace be upon her) University.
 From modest beginnings as “Institute for the Higher Education of Girls” ,and as a result of consecutive developments, Alzahra University has grown to a university with 7 faculties of :
1)Theology and Literature] , 2) Physical Education and Sports Sciences , 3) Social , and Economic Sciences 4) Sciences , 5)Education and Psychology , 6)Technology and Engineering , and  7) Arts

Alzahra University at Present

The university has an academic faculty of 308 members and about the same number of guest lecturers in 33 educational departments, who teach, supervise and guide about 4683 students  (beginning of 2003) ,of which 31 fields are at undergraduate,24 at M.A. and M.Sc and 6 at Ph.D. level .
The university has also established a research center for studies on women, which has been conducting research projects since 1376 (1998).
] The faculty of Theology and Literature in near future will be divided into two separate faculties of :
I) Theology and ii) Literature and Humanities and thus the number of the faculties of the  university will increase to 8 .

Academic centers

1-Faculty of Theology & Literature

The Faculty of Theology and Literature has 5 educational departments which altogether offer 8 fieldsof study at B.A., 3 at M.A. and 1at Ph.D. level. These departments include: English Language & Literature, French Language, Persian Language & Literature, History, Islamic Theology, and Islamic History & Civilization in 8 fields. The faculty has an academic faculty of 59 full time members and about the same number of part time members who teach and supervise about 993 students. The faculty has two Language Laboratories, a computer center and a library with a collection of more than 27000 books in Persian and more than 7000 in English and French Languages.

2-Faculty of Physical Education and Sport Sciences

This newly-founded faculty with the academic department of Physical Education and Fitness offers 3 fields of study at undergraduate level. The faculty has an academic faculty of 11 full time members who teach and supervise about 282 students. The facilities of the faculty include: a multipurpose gymnasium, two intramural swimming pools and a library which has more than 2429 Persian and more than 418 English books.

3-Faculty of Social Sciences & Economics

This faculty has 5 academic departments of : 1) Management , 2) Accountancy , 3) Social Sciences , 4) Economics &  5) Family Studies , & it offers 5 fields of study at B.A. , 7at M.A.(with 2 different areas of emphasis)& 1 at Ph.D. level . This faculty has an academic faculty of 52 full time members & about the same number of part time members who teach and supervise a student body of 883. The resources available at the faculty include : an audio-visual center, a bank of general & special software related to the fields of study offered, and a library with a collection of more than 8372 Persian and more than 6727 English books .

   
4-Faculty of Sciences

The fields of study offered by the faculty include 5 at B.Sc. (with 2 different areas of emphasis).& 5 at M.Sc (with 9 different areas of emphasis) and 1  (with 2 different areas of emphasis) at Ph.D. Level . This faculty, in addition to an observatory, has specially equipped laboratories utilized in the following areas :
Physics : Basic Physics, Optics, Electronics, Modern Physics, Laser, Nuclear and Crystal Growth ;
Biology: Microbiology, Industrial Biology, Nutrition, Biochemistry, Morphology, Physiology, Zoology, Anatomy, Immunology, Bacteriology, Systematic Botany, Biobotany, Research in Botany, Physiological Botany, and Physiological Zoology ;     Chemistry: General Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Physical Chemistry, and Inorganic Chemistry.
Another facility of this faculty is a special computer workshop which in conjunction with other theoretical courses is used by the academic staff of the department of Mathematics. The library of the faculty has more than 1634 Persian and more than 2077 books mainly in English.
The faculty of Sciences has an academic faculty of 92 full time members and about the same number of part time guest instructors who teach and supervise about 990 students.

5-Education and Psychology

6-Faculty of Engineering & Technology
This faculty was founded recently and at present it has 2 academic departments of: 1) Industrial Engineering & 2) Computer Engineering and the programs of study they offer at B.Sc. level are : Design & Systems Analysis and Computer Software Engineering and IT management at M. Sc. Level   . This faculty has an academic faculty of 10 full time members and more than 30 part time guest lecturers who teach & supervise a student body of about 309 . The faculty utilizes resources  such as access to computer center, machine shops  for machining ,welding, Laminating a drawing room & its necessities and a library with about 720 books in Persian and another 840 in English .

7-Faculty of Art

The faculty of arts has 6 educational departments   which offer 5 fields of study at B.A., 4 at M.A.& 1 at Ph.D. level. The academic departments are: Industrial Design, Handicrafts, Textile & Fashion Design, Graphic Design, Painting and Research in Arts. The resources of the faculty include: audio-visual facilities, a Xeroxing center, a library with a collection of more than 2442 printed matter in Persian and more than 2988 titles in modern European languages, a special workshop for animation and a computer terminal for access to the computer center.
