Dr M: I had always sought guidance from the Quran

The Prime Minister said that while some people might feel that his administration had not followed the strict teaching of Islam, the truth was that he had always sought guidance from the Quran.
“Although we don’t implement Islamic law, when we do things, we always refer to the teachings of Islam,” he said at a dialogue with about 100 Syrian Muslim scholars here yesterday.
Dr Mahathir said this when asked by a participant whether he planned to write a book about his views on Islam and his experiences relating to Islamic issues.
He saidMalaysia had always held fast to the principle of justice as the basis for all of its laws and policies.
Asked for his opinion on suicide bombings inPalestine, Dr Mahathir said that killing innocent people was un-Islamic, although there were mitigating reasons.
“The Palestinians don’t have other means of fighting for their independence, so they carry out suicide bombings. It’s still an act of terror, but they have no choice.
