Iran condemns filmmaker death in Syria

iran foreign ministry spokesman abbas araqchi

Iran Foreign Ministry Spokesman Abbas Araqchi has condemned the death of Iranian filmmaker Hadi Baghbani by foreign-backed Takfiri terrorists near the Syrian capital, Damascus.

“The responsibility for the martyrdom of this Iranian journalist and documentarist falls on the countries that supply money and arms to armed groups in Syria and encourage them to massacre Syrian people and foreign nationals in this country,”‌ Araqchi said on Wednesday.

Baghbani was slain by the operatives of the al-Qaeda-linked al-Nusra Front in a suburb of Damascus, on Tuesday. He had traveled to Syria to shoot a documentary about the ongoing crisis in the country.

Araqchi further called on the international community to follow up on Baghbani’s death and fulfill its duty of protecting journalists and filmmakers working in critical conditions.

On September 26, 2012, Press TV correspondent Maya Nasser was shot and killed by a militant sniper while reporting live. He was being accompanied by Hussein Mortada, who was also injured in the attack. Mortada serves as Damascus bureau chief for both the English-language Press TV and Arabic-language al-Alam news networks.

Syria has been gripped by deadly unrest since 2011. According to the United Nations, more than 100,000 people have been killed and millions of others displaced in the violence.

According to reports, Western powers and their regional allies, especially Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey, are supporting the militants operating inside Syria.
