ostad cave

The village of Ostad with an altitude of 1450 meters from the sea level is located 30 kilometers away from the south east of Farooj town and 95 kilometers south east of Bojnoord, the center of the province. The Khosravieh Mayvan River runs in the east of the village. Ostad village enjoys a moderate mountainous climate and it is around five centuries old. Qale’ Kohne, Hamam Qadimi and Masjid Jame’ are among its monuments. The people of the village speak in Farsi language and are Shiite Muslims.

The villagers make a living via agriculture, gardening, animal husbandry, and handicrafts. We can mention wheat, barley, pea, lentil, saffron, cotton, cumin, pomegranate, grapes, fig, mulberry, apricot, almond, walnut, melon and watermelon as the main products of the village.

Raising sheep and cow has made it possible to produce dairy and also meat; yet the ghee and whey are more famous for their good quality. It is worth to mention that the major source of the village’s irrigation water is the floods and the villagers make small soil dams on the way of the seasonal floods to reserve water. There are some sixty of these dams and the areas adjacent to them are under cultivation of kitchen garden crops, wheat, cotton, tomato, frankincense and beet roots. Among handicrafts of the village carpet weaving is a major one.

The village of Ostad has a dense residential context and is situated on a step like slope. It is worth knowing that after the earthquake in 1968 there was a new village built near the old one. Thus in the construction of the new houses engineering principles are well observed. Since the village enjoys different facilities, more than 95 percent of its population are educated, some of them with high degrees.

There are a lot of tourist attractions around the village. It is surrounded with lofty mountains which are every year frequented by the lovers of nature. These heights are of the rocky types and have little flora, but in some lower parts pastures and forests can be seen. The banks of the Khosravieh Mayvan River are especially suitable for pastime and recreation in spring and summer. The two resorts of Senjed Bala and Senjed Payin are also pleasant places for the lovers of nature. Senjed Bala is located on the mountain slope and has a fine spring that irrigates the lower farm lands. Inside the mountains of the region there are caves and springs, too. Regions like Kalateh Ahani, Se Rah-e-Juye Bala and Golaaqe are other beautiful and intact spots of the area. Golaaqe and Kalateh Ahani are rich in fauna and have gathered hunters to the place for a long time. The Ostad cave, with an approximate length of 110 meters is located in a valley near the village and there is a spring gushing across it.

The remnants of Sar Godar castle, the old bath, the old mosque and Takhte Hesar are among tourist attractions of the village. The bath is more than a hundred years old and is constructed at a lower level from the ground to preserve its warmth. This village of Ostad is accessible via an asphalt road coming from Farooj and Shirvan towns.

Another attractive village is Khosravieh located on the mountain chain of Shah Jahan. The peak of the chain is 3032 meters high. Khosravieh village is in a green valley 25 kilometers south west of the town of Farooj. The Khosravieh River known as “Kal Khooni”‌ passes from the middle of the village. It is very cold in winter and cool and pleasant in summer. Most of the inhabitants of the village are farmers and husbandmen.

This village is the birthplace of the great clergyman “Ayatollah Najafi Quchani.”‌ It is very rich in traditional architecture. Some religious buildings like the tombs of Baba Hussein and Baba va Bibi indicate the cultural richness of the region. The tomb of Baba va Bibi remains since the time of the Timurid rule. This building is in fact a large and high hall. One of the unique tourist attractions of the village is a natural glacier. This glacier is a dark place which functions as a fridge for the villagers in summer.
