Cairo,
The Special Committee for Rectifying the Azhar’s educational curriculum has completed the amendment of at least 40 percent. The Grand Sheikh of Azhar, Dr. Muhammad Sayyid Tantawi, said that these changes have been effected in accordance with “our own conviction ”and“ we will not accept any interference from America or anyone else in the Azhar curriculum.” He said the changes were long overdue, in that since 1975 no amendments had been made to the curricula, adding that no changes have, however, been made in the basic and firm principles of Islam. He gave the example of the concept of Jihad, and said no changes could be effected in this regard, adding that no one, either expressly or by implication, has hinted to the Azhar to amend its curricula.
