The Commission for “European-Islamic Dialogue"

Berlin, March 7(IINA)

Dr. Gunter Mollack, the Commissioner for “European-Islamic Dialogue,” at the German Foreign Ministry, has said that ignorance about Islam in the West is considerable, adding that this was mainly because the Europeans don’t learn about Islam from its genuine and authentic sources, but rather from unreliable ones.

In an interview with IINA, the Commissioner said that there are now 3.5 million Muslims in Germany, and that they are faced with numerous social and political problems. But, he added, talks are now going on between government officials and Muslim representatives on how best to deal with the Muslim situation, in the same way that other religious groups are dealt with.

He said, however, that Muslims need to open up to the society in which they are living, such as holding dialogues and joint activities with other members of the society who are not Muslims.

Mollack said that at the moment Muslims are allowed to set up their own schools in Germany, and that in Berlin alone there already are five such schools, in addition to 17 mosques and an Islamic Center.

Turning to the question of harassment of Muslims in the country, the Commission said that in Germany Muslims have become part and parcel of the country’s social fabric, adding that the country’s Muslims not only consist of ethnic immigrants, but also indigenous German Muslims, and therefore they are considered one of the German realities of life.
