How to Get Rid of Pink Eye

pink eye

Pink eye (also called conjunctivitis), occurs when the material that covers the white part of the eye becomes irritated or inflamed. This results in itching, lots of tearing, and pain. The contagious forms of pink eye are usually caused by bacterial or viral infections. Non-contagious forms of pink eye can be caused by various irritants, like dust and smoke in the air, or allergens, or chemicals.

Symptoms of pink eye

· If you have viral pink eye, it's often only in one eye, which will water a lot and may have crusts forming on the eyelid, and have a light discharge.

· Bacterial pink eye often spreads to both eyes, and can cause a slight greenish discharge (eww!). You might also get crusts.

·Allergic forms of pink eye will be itchy, and your eyes will be very watery. This also affects both eyes. Your nose might be itchy and runny as well. There probably won't be any weird discharges or crusts in this case.

Viral and bacterial forms of pink eye are extremely contagious, so if you have that, stay away from other people as much as you can. If you just have it in one eye, do not touch the other eye, because it can spread to both that way.

Ways to Get Rid of Pink Eye Fast

You should really call your doctor as soon as you can. Let him (or her) diagnose what kind of pink eye you have, and then take whatever medicine they give you for it.

There are some things you can do yourself to relieve the pain and other symptoms.

The first thing you need to know is that it is necessary to keep your eyes clean during this infection. Wiping your eyes regularly with a cotton ball soaked in lukewarm sterile water helps with this purpose. Make sure to throw the cotton balls in the garbage after wiping your eyes as leaving them lying around can spread the infection further. It is also essential to wash your hands properly after touching your eyes to prevent pink eye from spreading. Wearing contact lenses or touching your eyes is not recommended during this time. Wear your glasses until the infection goes away completely.

Here are some effective home remedies that can help you to get rid of pink eye:

· Soak a chamomile tea bag in warm water (you can simply make a cup of chamomile tea) and wait till the tea bag cools down. Then place the tea bag on the eyes for ten minutes. You can repeat the procedure a few times in a day. Another option is soaking your eyes in a cup of cold or lukewarm chamomile tea.

· Add some honey to a cup of lukewarm sterile water and apply the mixture directly on your eye. This is a natural antiseptic remedy that helps you get rid of pink eye fast. You may feel a stinging sensation in your eyes when you apply this mixture, but it is completely normal and goes away after some time.

· According to some people, applying a piece of bread soaked in milk to the infected eyes is one of the fastest ways for getting rid of pink eye. Take a piece of white bread and put some milk on it for dampening it. Next, place it on the affected eye and wrap the eye with gauze to keep the bread piece in place. It is recommended to apply the bread before bedtime so that you can keep it on all night. Remove the gauze and the bread next morning and your pink eye should be cured.

· Cold or warm compress (whichever feels more soothing) can help to reduce the irritation in the eyes. You can repeat the procedure 3 to 4 times a day.

· Rubbing some aloe vera juice across the eyelids is another effective home remedy for getting rid of pink eye.

· You can make a mixture of turmeric in water - 2 cubic teaspoons of turmeric powder in a cup of hot water, soak that onto a cloth and put it over your eye.

· Wash your eye in a mixture of salt and warm water. Do this 4-5 times a day. This may burn a bit.

· What you can use potatoes for though is to grate raw potatoes and put the slices over your eyelid. This helps with inflammation. Do this for at least 3 nights in a row for best results. You can leave the potato slices on your eyelids overnight (as long as they don't fall off).

· Beta carotene and Vitamin A rich foods are suggested for pink eye patients. Oranges and yellow fruits including squash, pumpkin, oranges and carrots are recommended.
