The Birth of Jesus, one of the Great Miracles of Allah
The event of the birth of Jesus is one of the great miracles of Allah. Mary was a serene, chaste and virtuous woman and followed the instructions of Allah. One day when she was alone the Archangel Gabriel came to her and gave her the glad tidings of having a baby. This event has been explained in the Holy Qur'an and also in some versions of the Gospel. Allah the most High says in the Holy Qur’an in ayahs 16 to 18 of Surah Maryam:
"And mention in the Book Mary, when she withdrew from her family to an easterly place;
“Thus did she seclude herself from them, whereupon We sent to her Our Spirit and he became incarnate for her as a well-proportioned human.
“She said, ‘I seek the protection of the All-Beneficent from you, should you be Godwary!’”
The birth of Jesus without a father, that is, without her Virgin Mother being associated with any male, is indeed a divine miracle, and sign of wisdom of the Almighty Creator, Who is the originator of all and everything, including the laws of nature, which man despite his progress cannot transgress or transform. His miraculous birth caused confusion in minds that failed to understand Divine Power and Prudence. As a result, while some thought his virgin-birth to be a sign of his divinity, others like the Jews who opposed him, tried to slander his chaste and pure mother. These people fail to understand that it is not difficult for Allah to do anything he wants. He can create a child with both human parents, or through only one. No miracle is beyond His power. After all, He had created Adam and Eve from neither a man nor a woman. He created the rest of us from both man and woman. What is so hard if Allah decides to create a human being from a woman only? He only commands “Be” and it occurs. Some people think that since Jesus, peace be upon him, had no human father then God must be his father. The Qur’an rejects this absurd view. The position of Jesus with Allah is comparable to the position of Adam with Allah. Just because Adam had no human parent does not mean we should call him the Son of God. The Almighty rejecting both the allegations says in the holy Qur’an in ayahs 59 to 60 of Surah Aal-e Imran:
“Indeed the case of Jesus with Allah is like the case of Adam: He created him from dust, then said to him, ‘Be,’ and he was. “This is the truth from your Lord, so do not be among the skeptics.”
Verses 27 to 35 of Surah Mary, which we now recite, also firmly refute any allegations regarding the Virgin Mary and the fact that Jesus, despite his miraculous birth, was a mere creature of God and a Prophet to guide the people:
“Then carrying him she brought him to her people. They said, ‘O Mary, you have certainly come up with an odd thing! O Sister of Aaron [’s lineage]! Your father was not an evil man, nor was your mother unchaste.’ Thereat she pointed to him. They said, ‘How can we speak to one who is yet a baby in the cradle?’ He said, ‘Indeed I am a servant of Allah! He has given me the Book and made me a prophet. He has made me blessed, wherever I may be, and He has enjoined me to [maintain] the prayer and to [pay] the zakat as long as I live; And to be good to my mother, and He has not made me self-willed and wretched. Peace is to me the day I was born, and the day I die, and the day I am raised alive.’ That is Jesus, son of Mary, a Word of the Real concerning whom they are in doubt. It is not for Allah to take a son. Immaculate is He! When He decides on a matter, He just says to it, ‘Be!’ and it is."
