New US bans on Iran will fail, against international law: MP
An Iranian lawmaker says the new sanctions imposed by the United States on Iran over Tehran’s nuclear energy program are against international law and will bear no fruit.
“The sanctions [imposed] on seven firms and five other Iranian individuals by the US are in violation of human rights and against international regulations,” member of the Majlis Committee on National Security and Foreign Policy Muhammad Hassan Asafari said on Saturday.
He added that the new round of the US sanctions showed the contradiction in the attitude and behavior of the country’s officials.
The legislator said that the US officials speak about holding talks with Tehran while they impose tougher sanctions against the Islamic Republic and emphasized that such measures would fail to yield any result.
Asafari noted that the US sanctions exposed the bullying nature of the American officials, saying the US government always seeks to pursue a dual attitude towards nations.
On December 13, the United States imposed fresh sanctions on seven Iranian companies and five nuclear experts for ‘contributing to the country’s nuclear energy program.’
"These entities and individuals were designated because they provide the Iranian government goods, technology and services that increase Iran's ability to enrich uranium and/or construct a heavy water moderated research reactor," US State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said.
The bans, imposed by the US State and Treasury departments, will block any American business with the designated firms and people.
The illegal US-engineered sanctions against Iran were imposed based on the unfounded accusation that the Islamic Republic is pursuing non-civilian objectives in its nuclear energy program.
Iran rejects the allegations, arguing that as a committed signatory to the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and a member of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), it has the right to use nuclear technology for peaceful purposes.
In addition, the IAEA has conducted numerous inspections of Iran's nuclear facilities but has never found any evidence showing that Iran's civilian nuclear program has been diverted to nuclear weapons production.
