Protesters Rally outside French Embassy in Baku over Prophet Cartoons
Protesters rallied outside the French Embassy in Baku to protest against caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad published in French periodical.
Police dispersed the gathering on September 24, detaining several protesters.
The French magazine Charlie Hebdo published Prophet Muhammad cartoons, exacerbating the outrage in the Muslim world after a U.S.-produced anti-Islam film "Innocence of Muslims" already sparked protests all over the world last week.
Charlie Hebdo, an anti-establishment weekly whose Paris offices are under police protection, defied critics to rush out another run of the publication.
Mohammed Moussaoui, leader of the French Muslim Council (CFCM), described both the film and the cartoons as "acts of aggression", but urged French Muslims not to take to the streets for unauthorized protests.
President Francois Hollande's government has sought to balance a cherished tradition of freedom of expression with security concerns, denouncing Charlie Hebdo as irresponsible.
