NAM summit in Tehran political tsunami against US, allies: Iran MP
An Iranian lawmaker says Iran’s successful hosting of the 16th Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) Summit was a political tsunami against the US and its allies.
“The Non-Aligned Movement summit in Iran and the consensus of 120 countries particularly on the final statement was as much a great success for our country as a political tsunami against the posturing of the US, the Zionist regime (Israel) and some of their allies,” spokesman for the Majlis Presiding Board Abdolreza Mesri told ISNA on Saturday.
He added that Canada, a close ally of the US, closed its embassy in Iran to divert attention away from the Islamic Republic’s success in holding the NAM summit in Tehran.
The legislator noted that Iran would take a reciprocal measure against Canada’s move.
The 16th NAM Summit wrapped up in the Iranian capital on August 31, with the member states passing a final resolution, which included over 700 clauses.
Meanwhile, spokesman for the Majlis Committee on National Security and Foreign Policy Hussein Naqavi Husseini described as a “diplomatic suicide” the Canadian government’s move to close its embassy in Tehran, saying the move has no place in diplomatic conventions.
“This move by the Canadian government shows the Islamic Republic’s success in managing one of the most important international movements,... holding the Non-Aligned Movement summit in Tehran,” he said.
Following the Iranian nation’s great diplomatic victory to hold an important international meeting at the highest level, Canada showed the irrational reaction in line with the policies of the US and the Israeli regime, the lawmaker pointed out.
NAM, an international organization with 120 member states, is considered as not formally aligned with or against any major power bloc. It represents nearly two-thirds of the UN members.
