Lebanese president Suleiman will attend NAM summit in Tehran: Embassy
Lebanese President Michel Suleiman will take part in the forthcoming summit meeting of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) which is scheduled to be held in Tehran in late August.
Sources at Lebanon’s Embassy in Tehran told IRNA on Wednesday that Lebanon, as a NAM member, will take part in the Tehran summit at the highest level.
The sources added that President Suleiman will bring with him a high-ranking delegation to Tehran which will include the country’s Foreign Minister Adnan Mansour, who will attend the foreign ministerial meeting of the NAM summit.
Suleiman finalized his plan to take part in the Tehran NAM summit during a recent visit to Beirut by Secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council Saeed Jalili on August 6.
The 16th summit of the NAM member states will be held between on August 26-31 in the Iranian capital.
Iran will assume the rotating presidency of the movement for three years during the Tehran summit.
NAM, an international organization with 120 member states and 17 observer countries, is considered as not formally aligned with or against any major power bloc.
The organization was founded in the former Yugoslavia in 1961. The countries of the Non-Aligned Movement represent nearly two-thirds of the UN members and contain 55 percent of the world population.
NAM's purpose, as stated in the Havana Declaration of 1979, is to ensure “the national independence, sovereignty, territorial integrity and security of non-aligned countries.”
