Australia sees anti-commonwealth rally
More than one thousand Australians take to the streets to peacefully protest as the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) begins in Perth.
According to Press TV, protesters gathered in central Perth and marched through the city as CHOGM leaders came together for the three-day summit.
Protesters staged a brief sit-in near the Perth Convention Center, threatening to follow the Occupy Wall Street (OWS) protests currently being carried out in the US.
Australian police arrested tens of demonstrators during the recent protests in Sydney and Melbourne.
Aboriginal flags were held high, while slogans calling for an end to the Afghanistan war, the detention of refugees, and the growing divide between the rich and poor were chanted.
The leaders of the 54-nation CHOGM are expected to discuss issues relating to trade, climate, and changes regarding the rules of royal succession.
