Saleh forces kill 9 protesters in Yemen

yemeni regime forces in the capital sana’a

Security forces loyal to Yemen’s Ali Abdullah Saleh have killed at least nine anti-regime protesters and wounded dozens of others in the Yemeni capital Sana’ a, medics say.

The fatalities occurred in Sana’a on Saturday after security forces opened fire on hundreds of thousands of demonstrators calling for an end to Saleh’s three-decade rule, AFP reported.

Saleh loyalists used live rounds, teargas and water cannon to disperse protesters marching on the city centre from their stronghold in Change Square, witnesses said.

The protest came as sporadic shelling and gunfire took place in the Hassaba district of Sana’a between Saleh forces and armed tribesmen loyal to opposition tribal leader Sadiq al-Ahmar, witnesses said. There have been no reports of casualties.

Saleh returned to Yemen from Saudi Arabia on September 23, after receiving treatment for wounds he sustained in an attack on the presidential palace in June.

According to local reports, hundreds of Yemenis have been killed and thousands more injured since the beginning of the popular uprising against the Saleh regime in late January.
