Opposition fighters have said they have taken control of most areas in the Libyan capital, Tripoli, following fierce clashes with remnants of pro-Gaddafi forces.

According to Press TV, opposition sources say 95 percent of Tripoli has now been liberated by the revolutionary fighters.

Abdel Nagib Mlegta, head of operations for the liberation of Tripoli said, "We control 95 percent of Tripoli".

Mlegta also hoped that the fighters would fully control the capital within the next 72 hours.

The developments come as opposition fighters advanced into the heart of Tripoli early Monday, seizing control of much of the capital without facing significant resistance from regime forces.

They are now facing only small pockets of resistance from Muammar Gaddafi’s loyalists in other areas.

However, opposition fighters have not managed to find Gaddafi yet and his exact whereabouts are still unknown.

The revolutionaries have also sent forces to Gaddafi’s hometown of Sirt, in order to locate Gaddafi.

Meanwhile, the head of Libya’s National Transitional Council (NTC) has announced that the Gaddafi era has ended.
