Falling from windows up in summer
The number of children injuries caused by falling from an open window increases in hot summer days, health experts warn parents, urging more safety measures.
The US Consumer Product Safety Commission warned parents that each year about 3,300 children aged 5 years and younger are treated for falls from windows, HealthDay reported.
"Children younger than 5 are particularly curious about their environment and the events happening outside of a window are a natural draw for a child’s attention," said Dr. Michelle Macy from the University of Michigan.
"Relatively large heads make it difficult for them to keep their balance, which is particularly true when they are leaning forward, like they do when trying to look out a window," she added.
Safety experts warn that window screens are not strong enough to prevent children from falling through the window.
"A screen is not a safety device," Amy Teddy, Injury Prevention Program manager at Mott said." They’re designed to keep bugs out, but not to keep children in."
Experts suggest parents and care givers to take more measures to prevent children’s potentially fatal falls from windows.
Putting an eye on children while a window is open, installing window Guards, safety Barriers and moving furniture such as a chair or beds away from windows can prevent children from leaning out a window.
Minimum openings and making sure that windows on upper floors are closed or never open more than a few inches are some other measures that may provide more safety for children in summer.
