Heavy rainfalls destroy Bolivian homes
Heavy rainfall in the Bolivian capital has led to the destruction of hundreds of homes and roads, after they were struck by massive mud and landslides.
On Sunday, authorities reported that some 400 homes have been destroyed in the usually dry Bolivian capital, La Paz.
Due to swift evacuations, no casualties were reported immediately after the ''mega-mudslide,'' AFP reported.
“It is one of the worst disasters this city has seen in terms of the number of houses affected. It is a mega-mudslide, a massive disaster,” said a spokesman for the mayor’s office, Edwin Herrera.
Homes were leveled out one after another, as some neighborhoods were destroyed almost completely.
Experts say the El Nino weather phenomenon is responsible for the unusual rainfall.
Torrential rains have caused flooding and landslides around much of Bolivia in the past weeks, claiming the lives of dozens of people.
Due to heavy rainfall, some 14,000 people have become homeless in Bolivia since January.
