World starts New Year celebrations

new year 2011

Fireworks and gigantic sparklers have lit the midnight skies of cities around the world as millions of people have gathered together with hopes and dreams to usher in the year 2011.

South Pacific countries were the first to start celebrating the beginning of the New Year and people from the rest of the world are counting down to the event.

The island nation of Kiribati was the first to welcome in 2011 at 1000GMT on Saturday.

New Zealand, at 1100GMT, and just two hours later Australia kicked off celebrations with an extravagant display of fireworks.

In Europe, crowds thronged landmarks like London's Big Ben and the Eiffel Tower, following a big freeze that paralyzed travel and cut power and water supplies for tens of thousands.

Many other Europeans, particularly people from Greece, Ireland, and Spain, will party through the night to help put a year of economic woes behind them.

In New York, nearly a million revelers plan to cram into Times Square to watch the midnight ball drop.

In Asia, about 400,000 watched a glittering fireworks-and-laser display along a neon-lit Hong Kong harbor, while millions of Japanese visited Shinto shrines.

Dubai witnessed jaw-dropping fireworks at the Burj Khalifa tower. Thousands of people were awe-struck as a spectacular fireworks display erupted from the world's tallest tower at the stroke of midnight.

The clock struck 12 in Dubai and the city's iconic tower sparkled in the luster of thousands of lights, fireworks, and laser beams to make it the world's highest fireworks show.
