Iran laser scans Belqeis Castle
Iranian experts have started documenting and laser scanning the ancient Belqeis Fortress near the northeastern city of Esfarayen in North Khorasan Province.
“The team is creating 3D models of the structures, architectural characteristics, inscriptions, wall paintings and mudbrick structures in the area,” project director Houman Meqdadian told CHTN.
“The findings will be of great help for restoring the ancient site,” he added.
Belqeis Fortress, known as Iran’s second largest brick structure after the Bam Citadel, is located 3 km from the modern day city of Esfarayen and is surrounded by the ruins of the old city of Belqeis.
Belqeis, which was deserted during the Safavid era, has been constructed based on the Sassanid school of architecture and includes 29 towers.
