Cancer survivors parents of minors
A new study has revealed that over 1.5 million US cancer survivors are parents who live with children younger than age 18.
According to the research, conducted by a team of US researchers, an estimated 18 percent of newly diagnosed cancer survivors and 14 percent of all US cancer survivors live with one or more of their minor children.
The research team, including Dr. Kathryn Weaver of Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem in North Carolina, analyzed data from 13,385 cancer survivors who participated in US national health surveys conducted between 2000 and 2007.
The findings indicated that about 1.58 million cancer survivors in the United States are living with about 2.85 million children. An estimated 562,000 kids are living with a parent in the early phases of cancer treatment and recovery, Reuters reported on Monday.
Meanwhile, the study emphasized the importance of family bonds in the rehabilitation of cancer patients.
The researchers hope this figure - calculated for the first time - will help make health care providers more vigilant of cancer hit families and provide them with additional support.
