Iran to announce terms for nuclear talks this week
Iran says it will announce its conditions for resuming talks with the five permanent members of the UN Security Council and Germany this week.
“Next week the Islamic Republic of Iran will announce its conditions for negotiating with the countries that issued the sanctions resolution against Iran,” President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said during a speech to a group of clerics in Tehran on Thursday.
On June 9, the United Nations Security Council approved the fourth round of sanctions against Iran in a 12-2 vote, but Brazil and Turkey voted against the resolution and Lebanon abstained.
Shortly after the sanctions resolution was issued, the United States and the European Union took unilateral punitive measures against Iran but also called for talks with Tehran to resolve the issue.
“(The West) issued the resolution and then called for talks. All right, we will talk, but will talk in such a way that they will regret it,” Ahmadinejad stated.
The call for talks showed that the major powers are more afraid themselves, he opined.
“Through issuing the resolution, they made their move, and now it is our turn,” he added.
Elsewhere in his remarks, he said, “Those countries that are threatening the Iranian nation are afraid, but Iran will defuse their threats.”
Certain countries think that the sanctions resolution is a sign of Iran’s weakness, but it is actually an indication of Iran’s strength and the world powers’ weakness, he added.
