Italy 1 - 1 Paraguay
Four-time champions Italy got off to a stuttering start in their World Cup campaign with a 1-1 draw against Paraguay in a Group F match on Monday.
In the 39th minute, Paraguay’s Antolin Alcaraz outjumped aging Italy captain Fabio Cannavaro and Daniele De Rossi to head home a cross from Aureliano Torres and give his team a 1-0 lead.
In the second half, De Rossi took advantage of a goalkeeping blunder to equalize for the Italians in the 63rd minute, stabbing home from close range after Paraguayan keeper Justo Villar failed to cut out a Simone Pepe corner.
The Italians had a few more good chances to score, but the Paraguayans clung on to share the points in the pouring Cape Town rain.
New Zealand takes on Slovakia in the other opening game in Group F in Rustenburg on Tuesday.
