Combo treatment can cure fibromyalgia
A combination of behavioral counseling and exercise therapy has shown promising results in alleviating the debilitating symptoms of fibromyalgia, a new study finds.
Fibromyalgia is characterized by widespread pain and discomfort at specific tender points along with fatigue and sleep problems. The condition is reported to be more prevalent among middle-aged women.
The underlying cause of fibromyalgia is unclear and hence there is no definite treatment for the syndrome. Painkillers, antidepressants, cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and exercise therapy can help these patients to some extent.
According to the study published in Arthritis Care & Research, the combination of CBT and exercise therapy provides the sufferers with more relief from pain, depression and fatigue than when they are used alone.
CBT, in general, aims to help individuals recognize thought patterns and emotional responses contributing to their symptoms. It also teaches them practical ways to change their behavior.
In this study, similarly, CBT sessions were designed to help the sufferers deal with their fear of pain and boost their daily activities.
Scientists considered the present study as the first such research showing the beneficial effects of CBT and exercise combo in overcoming the symptoms of fibromyalgia.
