Iran hopes dual policies be limited at next NPT review meeting
Iran hoped that the next NPT review meeting in New York would lead to restriction of double standard policies and balance the treaty, a senior nuclear energy official said Monday.
Head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran Ali-Akbar Salehi said the last meeting to review the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) held in 2005 was not very successful.
Salehi hoped that during the upcoming meeting dual policies would be limited as a result of the efforts to be made by the Non-Aligned Movement’s member sates that are ready now to defend their absolute rights for using nuclear energy for peaceful purposes.
The official stressed that necessary grounds should be prepated for all NAM members to have access to the peaceful nuclear energy.
Referring to the three basic principles of the NPT which are nuclear disarmament, non-proliferation of nuclear weapons and using nuclear energy for peaceful purposes, the official said certain nuclear-weapon-states have failed to take the issue of nuclear disarmament seriously.
Salehi noted that Tehran is seeking a balance to be achieved during the next NPT review meeting regarding these three principles.
