The Sufferings of Imam Ali after the Prophet's demise:
The battle of Seffeyn (1)
The sixth stage was the battle with Moaviye the son of Hind, the eater of the liver, and finally accepting the vote of the “Hakameyn”. A battle with the one who was the enemy of God and our Prophet from the time of the Prophetic Mission of Muhammad, till our victory in Mecca.
On that day, which was our triumph in Mecca against the heretics, the Prophet gave his word to me that he and his father Abu Sofian had sworn allegiance to him three times, and later the Prophet repeated this oath to me.
Also the father of Moaviye , Abu sofian at the beginning of the Caliphate of Abu bakr, was the first one who saluted me as the “Lord of the believers”, and used to tell me that I should go and ask for my usurped right, He also used to say he was always at my command .
So it was very strange to Moaviye when saw that God had finally bestowed me my usurped right. He was so very angry that he was not going to be the fourth caliphate that he went to Amro Ass, and told him that he would give him the government of Egypt if he with me .
By the way, even one dirham, more than his own measure was unlawful, and it was illegal for the one who had the responsibility of the Treasury of the government, to give him more than his share.
Anyway Moaviye and his group had gone to different cities and killed all the people who were against him, and freed the others, who had accepted his ruler ship. So Moaviye, with his broken oath, was trying to create rebellions in different places in our region. One day, Aawar thaghif (Moghira tibne shob e) came to me and said that we should appoint Moaviye as the governor of the cities that Moaviye had under his authority.
If I could have found a right excuse about that idea to often Our God, it would have been an interesting idea for my government and earthly wishes. But when I talked about that eventual proposal with my closest friends and true followers of the Prophet, but they also had the same opinion as me, and they believed that I shouldn’t give him any authority whatsoever!
I truly hoped that a day wouldn’t come that God would see me in cooperation with the heretics and poly theists!
So I sent a man from the tribe of Bajile and at another time, another man from the tribe of Ash ar yain to Moaviye to complete my warnings to him, but those two men the earthly comfort that Moaviye had proposed to them and began serving him…
When I saw that Moaviye hadn’t respected the rights and directions of God, I went and consulted with those who had been present in the battle of Badr, and in Bey?até Rezvan, and those whom God was pleased with their deeds; I also consulted with true Muslims and all of them believed that we should fight Moaviye, and to cut his hand from the authority of the Islamic government.
As you know my brothers, after our final decision which was war against Moaviye, I once again sent some letters along with many ambassadors to him; I thought maybe he would accept to walk in the right path and accept my Caliphate. But on the other hand, he had sent me many insulting letters and directed me to accept his insolent, offensive condition that was against our God, our Prophet, and the Islamic nation (Ummah).
One of his ridiculous conditions was that I should send him many of the closest friends of our Prophet to him, for instance Amar Ibne Yasser! And I ask you: where can we find a better man than Amar?! I swear to God Almighty that he always was close to the Prophet, and he always was beside Him.
Yes, Moaviye in his foolish conditions wanted me to send many a close friends of the Prophet to him, as a revengeful ransom for the blood of Ossman. And I swear to God that these men of God hadn’t kill Osman! And Moaviye and his tribe Bani Omaye which God, in the holy Quran talks about them as a “hellish root of scandal” [shajareye malun] had done that …
So when he finally understood that I will never accept his conditions, he gathered many violent people around him: brutal characters and bad company, and gave them a lot of money and precious gifts so as to obey his commands with closed eyes.
In contrast with them, we invited them all to Islam, and asked them to obey the directions of the Holy Quran! We talked about the harsh and hard punishment of God, but it didn’t work for them. So we fought with them and like always God, gave us final victory!
